Gas Mileage help

I bought my Camaro back in February and just started to drive it now. I got it with a full tank and when I was done driving it was just under F (35 miles). Since then I have started it. First two weeks every other day with a couple revs on each time. Then once a week for about two weeks now. The tank is at hafeway and was just asking if that is should be the area it was in. I drove it today for about 2 miles and when I pulled in it was on hafe and I started about just under 2/3. Just trying to see how much gas this thing will suck down.

Re: Gas Mileage help

Theres a good possibility that your fuel gauge is wrong. My basicly stock 87 GTA (L98) gets around 17 MPG with me driving it probably 60% highway 40% around town, not racing from every traffic light but certainly not driving like a grandma either. My bet is on your fuel gauge. The only way I would imagine you could go through half a tank not even driving the car would be if you're leaking fuel from your gas tank or something. I dunno. Just my thoughts

Yea I think it is. I drove it more ( I love the car) and it would go up to Full then down to empty.

Re: Gas Mileage help

the fuel gauges on 3rd gens. are not the most accurate . does your gauge level raise when you accelerate or go uphill ? does the level lower when you decelerate or go downhill ? if so its just like mine . BTW i have a 305 , T-5 , 3.08 rear , mild mods. , 27-29 m.p.g. on hwy. trips . enjoy and live with the gauge flux .

When I accelerate it goes up and when I got up/down hill it changes. I part it at level it got to hafe a tank. But I have only put about 55 miles on it since I got it. I also have revved it a lot in two days but then I just let the car run for 15min every week.

Re: Gas Mileage help

Everythng sounds about like it should be for these cars. They get great gas mileage when they are driven on an everyday basis but very short trips, idling, and free reving will suck it down very quickly. as was already posted these fuel guages are not the greatest but they are close so dont feel like you cant trust it at all. They move so much because it directly looks at resistance with every move of the float in the tank but newer cars are designed to have a delay in the guage so they dont move as much with every change in the float. Its working fine so dot worry bout it

You think its sucking down to much gas though. I bought the car with a full thank and then it went down to just under full after 40 miles of driving. Then started the car on and off for about a month. Then drove it for 7 miles today and it is hafe way

Re: Gas Mileage help

I think its actually right. when i bought mine it was bone stock and it had 3/4 tank in it when i bought it. I didnt drive the car on the street for a full week after i bought it. I started it everyday and occasionally drove it up my short driveway and back. reved it some too. By the time a week went by and i started driving it it had alittle less than a 1/4 tank left. burned over 1/2 a tank in the driveway! Filled it up and checked my mileage on the last tank and got 19mpg not being easy on it. car got 26mpg on the highway. So I think your situation is ok. I have 2.77 gears in my car but depending on what you have in the rear youu may get alittle less mpg. I think you are good though. you really just need to fill it up and reset the trip and fill it again when you empty it and check ur mileage. really the only way to tell.

Re: Gas Mileage help

best way to determine if your fuel consumption is a full tank of fresh gas, write your mileage down, drive it normally for several days and then fill it back up, divide miles driven by gallons filled and get your mpg. If you are getting really low mileage (less than say 15mpg...that seems to be about what most folks get in the city with these). It may be time for a tune up.

Re: Gas Mileage help

My 87 does the exact same thing and it gets pretty annoying, just when you think you didnt use that much gas you stop, the gauge goes down then you sit at the light for a few seconds and the gauge goes right in the middle to show exactly how much gas you have you accerlate and the gas gauge goes back twards full. but with my car in despreate need of a tune up and the o2 sensor not even connected ( it is now finally) i was geting 8-10 in the city but when it was running good i was getting about 15 in the city
