what is the best baseplate?
I hope it isn't the superram one because that is like $500

1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, 16" IROC rims and ASCD SS hood.
future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames,
T-56 almost ready to go in, TPI swap coming up
Wifes new car:
95Z28, AT, leather, T-tops bone stock for now.
future mods:
header to tailpipe replacement and a cold air intake. Then I am just going to leave it alone

Edelbrock, Accel, and TPIS, they're all about the same. Get the cheapest one.

Is it ok to port any of them? I mean they have plenty of material around them to port out the openings right?

How much would it cost to convert to that?

you can tell firebird has no miniram..... cuase hed now how big of a pain they are for drivability super rams are WAY BETTER!!! you can port your stock manifold out to almost as much...... and ive heard some people say theyve lined the two next to eachother and it looked like the stock manifold could be ported more!

any type intake will yield good results and good drvability with the right setup. You can have a very mannered MR setup that makes plenty of power. It's the cams that people can use with the MR that make those particular cars a little grumpy. You could easily go with a milder grind and have a very drivable car, but it would not use the MR to its potential. So don't think you can't have a good MR setup.
The SR, which is what i have, seems better for the street because of its lower powerband, so you can go with less agressive cam, gearing and torque converter and such.
As far as switching to one or the other, the MR is costly and would require a more aggressive supporting lineup of parts. But it would be nice to have an intake that is just 1 piece.
The SR is a pain to install and is also pricey, but not as much as a MR in most cases, and you can stick with a milder setup. It would work better with stock gear ratios and TC stall than the MR which needs some steep ones.
About the bases, they are all pretty much the same, I've heard they are cast by the same foundry then accel, edelbrock, and TPIS puts thier name on them and TPIS does some minor port matching to thier runners.
I would also go with the cheapest one you can find, and do your own porting.
------------------
'88 RS (originally 2.8)
-350, .040 over, vette alum. L98s, stock tpi.
-305 injectors & chip
-TES headers & edelbrock cat back
-3.73 gears, 700r4.
Best with 2.8-17.4@77mph
Best with 305-15.0@93mph
Best with 356-13.7@101mph
on a 2.050 60 ft.
(Damn the 2.8!)

hey thanks for all the help. I think someday I will go with the SR but for now I have my mind made up on a set-up so I will go with the Edelbrock it seems to be the cheapest

Corvette owner here. 383 with accel base. All I can say for the accel base is they provide you with every block off plate you can dream up, 9th injector, egr etc etc. Try to find those seperatly may be difficult. I found the accel to be suseptible to white corrosion here in wet holland, took it off painted it and now love it. The base did need some dremel work. The bolt holes didn't match my edelbrock heads. Edelbrock was initially ordered by me, but after a 3 month wait for delivery a cancelled and got accel. I did have to do some port matching. This is what I wanted to avoid by getting everything from one manufacturer edelbrock. It suprises me how indifferent vendors can be about delivery times! WHen will you then supply it sir? You asked me to call back last week the week before and so on. Now what.....the answer we don't know! I doubt the accel base comes from the same tool as the edelbrock does, I do know TPIS is an edelbrock unit. The biggest concern you will have is the angle at which the runners will interface to the base. If this is not properly done,( I feel mine was alittle off) then you will have trouble sealing the runners at the plenum. I had to help it with silicone! I still wonder If I have a vacume leak there because my car idles at 800 rpm. By the way I tried looking for leaks with propane, carb cleaner etc. The idle DOES NOT CHANGE with it. I took the vaccum line off of my fuel pressure regulator and noticed the idle going up to around 900 rpm, injected propane and other nice combustibles and it did nothing.
