Distributor Issues?

What have i done?

I have just changed the distributor the whole thing i was carefull to mark were the rotor was pointing then placed the new one with rotor pointing the same way but he engine wont even try to fire it has a spark.
I tried pulling the post out and placing it a notch out then it tried to fire but with all my trying and moving i have now lost its positon completly i need to know how to set up the distributor point corectly from scratch and how to set timing correctly.

The fly wheel has a mark on it if that lines up with the markers is that top dead centre on cylinder one?

I am no proffesional at this please can somebody explain it in easy terms..I have a timing light but not even sure how to use that...please help its been 9 months now with no engine running after changing every electronic part except the distributor and pick up coil i then found the pick up coil was broken hence his problem..

Thanks guys

Re: Distributor Issues?

There are 2 TDC on account of it being a 4 stroke engine.
Need TDC on Compression stroke ; finger over #1 plug hole while someone cranks engine, will blow finger off hole on comp stroke.

Re: Distributor Issues?

Hi thanks for your help yes i can find when the piston 1 is at the top and have lined this with the rotor pointing to lead and plug number one.
You would think that thiswould be fine and the engine will start especially as it did start before i changed distributor.
I realise once it starts i need to fine tune it with the timing light but thats not good right now untill it does start..

Now i realise if the distributor is in the block slightly to the left or right than before simply turning the cap after should fix that..

But what about te pick up coil? Say i do aline the rotor correctly with TDC number 1 that does notmeen the pick up coil is now sending its signal at the correct time????Or does the ecm fix this?

You see if i try and start it now there is no life in engine if i rotate the dizzy it just starts backfiring on me...Then if i remove the dizzy and place it backin the block say one cog to the left it then may try to fire better???

I did cut the tan/black wire when turning dizzy??

Im out of my depth here wish i lived in the states there seems to be nobody over here in england that can help..

"i rotate the dizzy it just starts backfiring on me.."

That shows you have spark , so everything is working correctly.
It is just in the wrong place.
Are you sure your are TDC on compression stroke ; not 180 degrees out ?

Re: Distributor Issues?

I have rotated crackshaft untill i feel the number 1 cylinder come up which i have done slowly and used screwdriver to feel with...this is when i lined it up with lead and plug number 1...Does this sound correct or would the cylinder come up also at a different stage of the firing?

Re: Distributor Issues?

If worse come to worse, try moving ALL the plug wires one position back or forth on the cap instead of screwing with the dizzy. If you are close or even one tooth off, this should compensate for it. Heck, you might even have to move them two spots over.

Re: Distributor Issues?

The piston being at TDC doesn't mean you have it right.
There are two different times that the number one piston will be at TDC, the COMPRESSION stroke, and the EXHAUST stroke. If you put the distributor in and set it when number one is on its exhaust stroke, you just put your distributor 180 degrees out of time. Make certain it's on the compression stroke when you set the distributor.

Re: Distributor Issues?

Yippppppeeee it runs thanks for all your help im notsure if it was 180 out i simply removed the dizzy pulled out plug one waited for it to come up to TDC looked at crankshaft marks lined them up with centre large cut out the put dizzy back in..First time it did not fire but then removing te dizzy cap i noticedthesmallcentre spring loaded pin was getting stuck in..
I changed that for the old one and bang it fired up great and runs great...
The dizzy got changed because i was having smoke problems from to much fuel this also was fixed and was the Pick up coil...
Thanks again
