Advice ..from ZZ4 cam to Hotcam, worth the hassle ?
Hi guys !
I have a 1987 350,bored .30 over,with a ZZ4 Camshaft,alum "128" heads
stock TPI intake.-
The only mods i've done to :
- ZZ4 Camshaft
- LT4 Springs
- Flat top Hypereutectics
- Bosch III injectors
- 4246 Edelbrock elite series valve covers
On the other hand I have a 700R4 with a Holeshot 2400 B&M Converter and a Transpak.-
Im really happy with it,but you know, the performance bug....
My original idea was to install 1.6 Roller Rockers,i dont want to do Heads or Intake mods for now,but i read about the Hotcam kit with very good comments....
Now i have some doubts
1 - From ZZ4 cam to Hotcam swap,worth the hassle ???? or i'd better add 1.6's and i'll be fine ?
2 - I have a nice set of Edelbrock elite series centerbolt covers,i want a set of 1.6 rockers that fit under them,i was told that Crane golds fit under them since they have a narrow body design,is this true ?
3 - Are the Hotcam kit rockers the same as Crane golds, just labeled as "GM" ?
4 - i have read that the Hotcam kit makes you decrease your MPG,how much?
i dont want a heavy gas drinker,i want a daily driver,just funnier
5 - Do i need a special tune from pcmforless.com to make it run right? Anyway i count on doing that
thanks in advance,i hope you can help me

I think the rockers would be the better value as they will gain, and be more usable with other cams/setups/goals. The cam swap I'd put at a 2 tenth subtraction from your 1/4-mile time, but for optimal performance will likely need more tuning and loose more mpg than the rockers would.

Re: Advice ..from ZZ4 cam to Hotcam, worth the hassle ?
I think I'm an expert on this subject, as I did this very swap.
350, ported corvette L98 heads, stock ported TPI intake with TPIS/AS&M long tube runners, SLP 1 5/8" headers, ZZ4 camshaft: 282 RWHP, 380 RWTQ.
350, even more ported corvette L98 heads, ported Edelbrock/TPIS intake with TPIS/AS&M runners, Dyno Don 1 3/4" headers, LT4 hot cam: 318 RWHP, 419 RWTQ.
Yes it required a custom tune. Mine was so rich on the stock chip it burned my eyes. The best tune is one you do yourself, or one someone does with the car in front of them. If that's not possible, you might be in for a back-and-forth session as the tuner tries to get it right.

Re: Advice ..from ZZ4 cam to Hotcam, worth the hassle ?
Kevin, I'd guess that your head and intake changes were responsible for a good part of that 36 rwhp gain, just because the peak torque showed such a significant jump. With just a cam change, I wouldn't expec the peak torque to change that much, just occur at higher rpm with the Hotcam. Out of curiosity, what rwhp did the Hotcam show at the same rpm where the ZZ4 cam rwhp peaked?
Calderone, with your setup, I'd put 1.6 rockers on the intakes only and leave the ZZ4 cam in there. With stock heads, I don't think you'll see a big hp increase with the Hotcam. You probably will see worse mileage though. That Hotcam has MUCH more overlap than the ZZ4 does.
If you do decide to go with the Hotcam, install it at a 107 ICL and not at the standard 109 for that cam (meant for roadracing and staying at high rpm).

Is this one dead?
Just some food for thought. Im kind of in the same boat.
The lt4 hot cam is not a bad way to go.
It started out as a showroom stock answer for GM in a very special one year only Vette. Stick only!!! i might add.
we forget that we are putting on 1:6 roller rockers at the same time. That worth a few ponies????
In your case your running an auto and you bought the stall. The hot cam will change that. they cant dyno as low as your stall hits. I bet the hot cam will make it stall lower than it does now. Street Car??
To be on the safe side do the 1:6 on the intake and 1.5 on exhaust.
spend what you save on the intake. TPI needs all it can get. I really dont think you would get any seat of the pants fun putting a hot cam under a stock TPI. The brickwall you run into at 5000 is both stock intake and stock exhaust. I live at 6000ft it was like stomping on the brake.
Go for the grunt. thats what TPI's do. If you start looking for high RPM's It will be a long battle.
Just to everyone going the stock L98 roller with 1:6 rollers is under rated in your setup. You need to find someone and start porting stuff. (Sorry)

Re: Advice ..from ZZ4 cam to Hotcam, worth the hassle ?
thanks for replying Snow
I backed off on this one
i don't want a high screamer,i didn't know thhat the Hotcam would push my powerband that up,i like down torque,i will be doing 1.5 and 1.6s on the intake plus a set of Hedman headers.-
That's for now....i have to see on the future what else can i do to create even more torque !
i accept all suggestions
thanks !
