Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
and here is a better pic of my fuel regulator location.... you see i can use the factory return line hose that will screw into the bottom of the regulator... all i need is a adapter to connect the hose to the regulator... all thats required now is two new lines which i will post pics eventually...

Also what kind of upper strut mounts are those????

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
im using umi adjustable strut mounts... it allows better caster and camber adjustments that are not possible with stock strut mounts... these also use chrome moly teflon spherical bearings instead of the stock rubber ones and they provide extra travel for lowered cars which my car is lowered....highly suggest getting these if your serious about handling.... here is the link to the caster plates

Oh yes am serious about handling..Have a ton in the suspension already..Just put new mounts on mine, but would love the extra camber....Those look tight also...My 89 is a real canyon carver as it is, blows my 92 Z28 away..Of course it is about 500 pounds lighter too which helps a bunch..Thanks for the reply..I look forward to reading more on your install......Good luck...

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
i have tons of suspension mods myself.... its pretty much full bolt on from front to back...i would put that summit card on those umi plates and use it to beef up that 89... they are worth it
350tpi's are nice but they need alot of work to get decent numbers out of them.. i would rather have a cornering freak than a all out powerhouse for the street......

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
Thats about all i dont have on it have umi control arms, and panhard hothkis subframe connects, all energy suspension pieces, even a arm bushings..Am going to look into those, they really look neat..i have a, lot more invested in the drive train, than the motor, or i should say the underneath of the car..It launches way better than the 92, out handles it too..of course past 100 foot the 92 has its way with its weaker brother......i kinda like having both the 89 runs 14's the 92 13's, so they are both fun to drive...the 02 Z has energy suspetion parts, but thats about it....500 pound difference in weight too tho like i said.Thanks..Tom
keep us posted.......

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
ok guys i started tearing down the old tpi... i just got off work so i only spent about an hour and im already down to just the base and dizzy.... i will mark the dizzy positions on the firewall so i wont have to take the spark plug out and find top dead center and all.. marking makes it close and will start right up without much issues... i will still need to use a timing light just to make sure but it saves alot of time..... just trying to get a early start.... will start back sunday morining....

Nice and clean.
Good progress!
I see you have your oil sender in place
Once you put the base on, check our port alignment if you can to see if they line up. Mine had to be milled to get the perfect line up. That is with milled heads and block.

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
well ran into two problems...
1... the oil sending unit adapter is too wide so i had to get a much smaller one to fit.... got that resolved..
2... the intake bolt holes dont quite line up to the head.... so i have to enlarge all the holes one size up on the intake manifold for it to work......
i have to go to work so i will resume either later today or early in the morning monday..

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
by the way i ditched my so called "ls1" rear end... come to find out after further inspection it was a lt1 rear end and it had 3.42 gears instead of the 3.73 that the guy said it was.. so the guy screwed me out of 260 bux but im getting a refund and getting a real torsen ls1 rear wed the 13th from a auto salvage yard.... it has 55,000 miles, zexel torsen rear has 3.42 gears and theh ls1 brakes... so with the first intake and swapping out from 3.27 nine bolt to a 3.42 ls1 ten bolt all in the same month, i really should see a HUGE improvement for sure...

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
well i finally got the manifold on.... it was a major pita to install because the bolt holes were a little off and the oil sending unit adapter was hitting the back of the base.... so we had to enlarge every intake bolt hole a little bit and grind the 90 degree oil adapter... but after five hours of trail and error my dad and i finally got the intake on.... and its sealed good... we used plenty of rtv sealant across the back and front of the block and put a little bit of rtv around the water passages....

I've been following this thread closely and want to say thanks for documenting everything in such detail. I plan on topping off my new 383 with a First sometime next spring and all your info has been extremely helpful.
Looks great and can't wait to hear how it all turns out.

Re: The official First fuel injection tpi system build
Problem for using it in CA is aftermarket parts have to carry a CARB EO number, if it doesn't have that you can't use it. $1200+ bucks is kinda spendy for a manifold you "might" get away with using and if you do get busted I think there are fines involved.

Man, I love the way that sounds. i never realized an LT4 HotCam had that much lope at idle.
How much vacuum do you have at idle?
Hmmmm ... a lot less lope here, and much quieter, yet the exhaust is listed as the same. What's different?

thanks man..... mods are in the "show more" section of the youtube page.... i love the way the hotcam sounds for my setup..... i dont want to change cams but i want to get rid of those garbage l98 iron heads for some afr heads now... i had the idle set at 850 from my old tune..... im not sure about the vacuum at idle but it i havent had problem with stalling out or anything.... now i know why its called the "FIRST" it comes in first place when it comes to tpi...... and people say you cant have tpi and a lumpy idle.....

i used a different phone for that particular video... it sounds way muffled and bassy..... plus my chip was tuned for the old tpi... i guess with the added air and more power it changed the sound of the cam im not sure but it does sound lumpier for sure.... .

Hmmmm ... a lot less lope here, and much quieter, yet the exhaust is listed as the same. What's different?

i used a different phone for that particular video... it sounds way muffled and bassy..... plus my chip was tuned for the old tpi... i guess with the added air and more power it changed the sound of the cam im not sure but it does sound lumpier for sure.... .[/QUOTE]
Lumpier is better!
And that Flowmaster 80 sure sounds a lot better than my Flowmaster 40. Do you end up getting any "special attention" from LE with that exhaust?

your right i havent changed the exhuast.... the only thing i have changed engine wise was the intake.... i used a video camera for the first tpi where i had used my camera video phone for all the others... the video camera sounds alot better than my cheap camera phone which doesnt pick up sound nearly as good. i didnt sound that lumpy with the old tpi im guessing because with my old system i had the chip tuned for that car.... but since i changed to the FIRST it idles meaner.... im guessing its because the new intake changed the air delievery and the computer trying to compensate for it.... either way im sure when i get a tune it will smoothen out abit.....

to be exact my exhuast mods are
hedman long tube headers with custom 3 inch flanges with custom oxygen sensor bung into the driver side header
3 inch y pipe made at henry's muffler shop
gutted 3 inch catco converter
flowmasters 80 series
3.5 inch tips.....
its a new fresh block with a much better roatating assembly and slightly higher compression than stock..... the engine has alot of special work done to it... its .6 grams off from being perfectly balanced.. it has been blueprinted and the rings have been specially gapped for street strip use...... the heads have been rebuilt from the ground up using manely parts to handle the hotcams lift.... i did not use gm's spring kit for the hotcam because they barely pass for being able to withstand the hotcam so i used much beefier springs.....

Maybe I should ditch my miniram too for this piece.
