very low fuel pressure at fuel rail
Hey everyone I broke down today and bought a fuel pressure tester and when I hooked it up (ignition on engine off) I got 15PSI and then it immediately dropped off. Alldata says it's sapose to be between 40.5 and 47.0 and the instructions are the tool said it should hold pressure until you push the button to release it. Anyways so I get what it's telling me I was just wondering where to start digging because the pump does pump for about 2 seconds and shuts off, but doesn't build enough or hold pressure so would that be meaning the regulator is faulty or is and automatically timed cuircut on start up? I know when cranking I can hear the pump, and after a while it'll sputter than if I give it a little gas it'll start and idle fairly high close to 1500-2000 rpm in park, which might that be a sign of a leaky injector? I had recently changed the fuel filter under the car is there one in the tank? I also inspected the rubber lines just outside the tank and them seemed solid (no craking or leaking) and no other noticeable leaks. or could it just be the pump is broke and allowing back flow of fuel? I am just look for someone with experience and telling me where to start. Thanks for your time.

Re: very low fuel pressure at fuel rail
Fuel pressure check is performed this way: Locate the schrader valve. Place a small towel around the area to catch any fuel as you attach the tool. I usually take off my gas cap first before i attach the gauge. Ok, so attach the gauge ,put the gas cap back on, Next disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from the intake manifold and plug it, also plug the other end at the manifold. Now start the car and check the fuel pressure. It should be at 43.5 psi (stock specs for a 350 tpi).

Do you smell gasoline around the car anywhere? That is a sure sign of a leak

nope no gas smell even checked at the front where it connects to the fuel rail no signs of leakage

I think you need to pull your plugs to really tell what is going on for that.

Re: very low fuel pressure at fuel rail
If as you say the pump is running then the rails should have pressure unless the FPR is allowing the pressure to bleed off back to the tank.
Can check the FPR by temporarily clamping the return line from the rail and see if the pressure rises with the pump running ; if it does the FPR is faulty.
If it doesn't then the injectors could be leaking but the cylinders should be full of fuel ( pull a plug ) and be running rich out the exhaust
There is also the known problem of the fuel line inside the tank from the pump leaking , bleeding off line pressure

Re: very low fuel pressure at fuel rail
okay I took the fuel pump out and came to find that the 1.5 inch hose connecting to the pump to the rest of the tube dealios was split. after buying a whole foot cuse they can't just sell me the length I needed, I found that the pump with the engine off key on got me 20 PSI and held. Then I got the car to start (fairly quickly
) and found that I got 43PSI (fallowing the method that ninethyone described above. I will give her a test drive tomorrow and retest the engine off key on might have just been plenty of air in the line from it being disconnected. Thanks for the help yall!!

If your pump was old, you maybe should have changed it while you were there. (filter changed?)
I hope they sold you submersible fuel line and not just high PSI fuel line.

Re: very low fuel pressure at fuel rail
probably not it was just the stander I kept asking for high pressure and he seemed confused on that. He kept saying fuel hose is fuel hose. It wasn't too hard to get as long as what they sold me will work for awhile

Fuel hose isn't fuel hose! there is high/low psi and submersible and non submersible.
If you put non submersible in the fuel tank it will swell up and blow out fairly quicky.
Bring your wallet cuz its pricey.
