Vortec Short block combo

If I were to replace my short block as well, and go to a 350 1996-2000 Vortec block #10243880, 1) would the TPI setup that I'm putting together using a scoggin-dickey or edelbrock intake manifold still work? Here is what I have so far. Also, do I need to get a 2-bolt main or a 4-bolt main?

Re: Vortec Short block combo

No need for 4 bolt mains there is no benefit until you get into the really high HP #s and RPMs.

EDIT: I just read that thread and you already have vortec heads. In that case you don't need a vortec block per say. Many people slap them on older blocks. So Just find any factory roller block and the edelbrock base you should be good to go.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

Yea I'd like to do that. My concern is my 305 now has over 250,000 miles on it, so since I already have most of the upper engine, why not get a new(er) short block as well. Being on a budget I don't want to spend over $2,000.00 on a new block, which looking online seems like a majority of the price ranges lie. I found a company called MABBCO that sells remanned blocks, which looked more in my price range.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

No I wouldn't put it on the 305 if that can even be done. But I meant by older block is they will bolt onto any 350 old or new. So your search doesn't need to be just for a vortec block. Just find a 87+ roller 350 short block and you are good to go.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

You don't HAVE to use a newer vortec shortblock, but brand new or used, there are NO better GM smallblocks/shortblocks ever made, and they're cheap. Quite frankly there's no other block I'd use, unless I stepped into the aftermarket.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

That's what I was reading about those sb's. So once I order the S-D manifold the shortblock will be next. It seems to have more pros than cons.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

I'm using that same block on my SD360VTPI motor.
Great combination... SD Vortec TPI intake, 350 roller block, headers and stock TPI and it runs like a beast. Sure beats the hell out of my old stock 305.

That's where I got my short block. Over a year now with no troubles.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

I've heard many bad things about MAABCO's quality control. I looked into them before I bought my ATK block.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

z28smitty, so basically a worked 350 to 360 with mild re-bolted on items and s-d intake and you feel like it is a beast, how much for swap out and parts? How does your 360 compare to modern v6 and lt1 ls1 crowd

Re: Vortec Short block combo

Well worse case I just go on ebay, grab a 350 block and have a machine shop rebuild it. Not my first choice but at least I could see whats being done to it.

Re: Vortec Short block combo

LateNite89, if you want to make a trip to Vegas, I've got a crate 350 vortec block that was machined by the PO to .035 over, waiting for final decision on rings and pistons to do final machine pass. Engine had 30K miles on it- PO was going to build a drag engine. Have the block, caps, balancer. $150.
