first thing is first, put on a good ignition and afpr. then make the engine breath and exhale. (cai and exhaust system) I've added a cat back and wish I wouldn't have done ignition first, then exhaust then the intake stuff. just my 2cents though

Well, I wouldn't spend this much time on this, but I'm bored and I was once in the same position as you. Maybe I should give you a little more credit, but since you're new to this board and usually only newbies ask a question like that, I'm gonna assume you dont know very much about TPI.

You should start off by looking at every part of this site. Look at tech articles and all the different boards. Remember that you can search though all of the old posts on any board by clicking on the SEARCH button towards the upper left of your screen. Also, remember that the TPI on a 305 and 350 is exactly the same.

Anyways...
First thing your car needs is a good tune-up. plugs, wires, high output coil.

Then replace your air filters with K&N airfilters from your local auto store. You can also check the tech articles on this site to see how to make your own cold air induction(CAI).

Then buy a new exaust system. For that, check out the exhaust board on this site. I would recommend Random Technologies, Flowmaster, or Hooker brands.
If you need to know where to buy these, go to summitracing.com, racesearch.com, or jegs.com

If you did all of these mods at the same time you will notice a HUGE difference. There are many other mods, but these are the basic, best bang for your buck parts.

I hope this was of some help.

I have a 85 305 TPI, 700r-4, under 50,000 actual. This is what I did, pretty much in this order as soon as I could.Typical free / low buck mods :
1) Set Throttle posistion sensor to correct setting of 0.54v, it was set at 0.39..this is too lean for crisp throttle response.
2) Gutted air boxes, made homemade cold air intake, pulling air from pressurized area ahead of radiator..this air is much cooler than engine compartment air, and at speeds above 20 mph, this becomes free forced cool air as well! Changed to K&N's & added air foil too.
3) Increased base timing from 6* to 10*. Started burning 92 octane as well to take advantage of timing bump & avoid pinging.
4) Removed MAF screens & fins.
5) "Modified" catalytic converter, still have original 3-in cat back mandral bent exhaust. (this car has 3-in converter inlet & outlet)
6) Adjusted transmission T.V. cable per specs to ensure crisp upshifts & downshifts. Changed Transmission fluid & filter. Went to Amsoil Synthetic fluid for longevity and longer fluid change interval.
7) Good tune-up: Bosch 4 platnium plugs, new G.M. cap & rotor, Hi-perf ignition wires, 170* t-stadt & put cooling fan on toggle switch.
8) Ported plenum.

These changes made ALOT of difference...throttle response was greatly improved, and at WOT the thing pulls MUCH harder. Each thing alone did very little..however combined they add up to an easy 35 or more h.p. These are simple / basic mods every 3rd gen must have to reach it's full STOCK performance level!

Do these mods, in this order.

1. Headers, either edelbrock TES's or SLP's. Make sure u get the y-pipe with the headers.
2. Gut your cat, or run a 3" pipe in its place.
3. Get a GOOD catback, either a 2 chamber flowmaster or a Borla, make sure it is 3" pipe from the cat to the muffler. Single is/dual out looks good, but most people get more performance out of a single in/single out muffler. Its your choice between looks and HP output.
4. take the baffles out of your air box, you can also cut out the bottom of the box if you get crazy with a saw.
5. Put an airfoil on your throttle body
6. I run a hypertech chip. It was there when I bought it. It advances timing and messes with fuel curves a bit. Maybe you dont go with a hypertech, but get some aftermarket chip.
7. MSD 6A box and Blaster Coil
8. Good set of plug wires, either Moroso Blue Max's or MSD Superconductors. at least 8mm. Also make sure you have a good cap and rotor on the distributor.
9. An adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

Those mods will give you a good increase in seat of the pants feel and should also give you some decent horse power gains. I think that exhaust is critical, and make sure you do it all at once. Most people here dick around with only headers or only a cat or only muffler and then cry when they ont get results. Its a whole system, got to fix the whole problem.

AFTER you have done those mods, its time to look at non-engine modifications which can be just as important and making the engine go. I am assuming you have an automatic trans.

1. Put a B&M megashifter in. Replaces the stock shifter handle. Benefits are its a ratchet shifter so u can manually shift at the track and on the street. I think it is one of the best mods I did to my car. Leaving the car in D at the track is not the way to race it.
2. Put a trans-go shift kit in. Only trans go, they are the best.
3. Put a higher stall torque converter in. Around 2,500rpm stall. Doesnt have to be anything fancy if your not gona run nitrous or a blower. I had real good luck with my Dacco until I sprayed my car and blew the trans.
4. New rear shocks. Laugh all u want people but by tuning my HAL's at the track I have knocked up to .2 off my ET. They also help with your 60' time. I would only run HAL (QA1) 12 way adjustable shocks out back, they have adjuster ***** on the shock body so u can easily tune them. They dont make a strut for the front yet so if you want to do the fronts too id get some Koni 3 way adjustables. New springs like the Eibach Draglaunch or a set of Lamb's wouldnt hurt either.

So those are my basic recomendations. If your at the track and u know how to use you stall converter, invest in some good DOT legal slicks like Hossier Quick Time Pro's or M/T ET streets. If anyone here disagrees with my plan thats fine, but just know I ran a 14.2 with just exhuast, chip, airfoil, and torque converter. My best run so far with all the mods in my sig minus the nitrous is 13.8. And that was when my car wouldnt shift into 3rd gear at WOT. I know of a lot of cars on this site and elsewhere at cant break out of 14.5 even with new heads and cams. BTW my car is a 350 so dont expect to run 13's but this should give you a good start and u could maybe do 13's with slicks and a really good launch.

14.94 @91.67mph when the car had an edelbrock 1406 on it.
Will have times soon when the track opens up.
I really want to see if all this work has accomplished anything.
Here are some videos of my car, some at the track and some at the street,
