Pro-Built, Just installed your trans please HELP
Pro built I just received my 700 R4 from you, I live in Kansas. It was the "road race" set up w/ the ACT stall set around 2200 RPM. Heres the problem while driving at slow speeds the car kind of chugs, it feels like the converter is locking in and out making it a very rough ride. Any ideas? My car is an 86 and you said the wiring would be different b/c the trans is newer. The shop who installed it said the main harness pluged right into the trans. w/ no problem. Could this be the cause of my problem? Please help
To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

Ive had similar problems to yours and usually its tv cable related, I doubt ProBuilt installed the TV linkage incorrectly but if it were installed wrong it could cause issues like yours.
At light loads it can lock in 3rd gear a little on the early side, there is a delay setup out there, (I don't know who makes it). It will make the torque converter clutch come on later, which is what you want. You might search the board, to see if anyone has had this problem & solved it & how they did it.

I just installed my Pro-Built tranny a couple of weeks ago. Really happy with it so far, I bought an ACT 2400 stall TQ to go with it. I have the same thing youve been experiencing, adjusting the TV cable helped alot. I ended needing to give it a bit more line pressure. I did however think about buying one of these:

Look at page 10, it shows a possible solution. I posted here asking if anyone had any experiences with it but no one replied. I'm still thinking about buying one, but kinda skeptical. Without having the TCC lockup my fear is that my tranny life will demish from the extra heat created. IF you find a product that works for you, please let us know. Many thanks.

thanks for the help. I just ordered a torque converter lock up delay from Hurst. It was like 40 bucks and it makes the converter lockup around 10mph later. I'll post my results as soon as I get it installed.

Put the converter in the corner of my garage and put the stock one back in. 10x's better. The converter I had was so f'ed up. I tried to send it back to ACT to check it out but I cant seem to get all the tranny fluid out. I sent it out twice thinking I had it secure. 3 days later its back on the porch with a note saying sorry its leaking. And everytime it was 34 bucks to ship it. Hell i only have 30 miles on it too and paid 575 for it and its doing this. Maybe i'l wrap it in 10000 bags and then send it out. I got a few more months before the warrenty is up.
If you will call me on this (Mkos1980), I will take care of it. I have sent TC's back before and if they leak, they will send it back. I will tell you how to stop it from leaking when you ship it. Please call me asap?

to keep the converter from leaking in shipment, just stick the rubber cap back on it, then use two wire ties around the snout to hold it tight. then wrap it in a green garbage bag, again wire tied...stuff the box with foam peanuts, mark the top as TOP, problem fixed, no more leaks.
the constant lock/unlock is NOT the fault of the act converter. the converter just does wht the car/computer tells it to do!! The stock converter is constantly lockinga nd unlocking too, but you just don't notice it because tey are so tight. The problem is, the computer is not calibrated for your converter. If you put a big cam in and it ran bad, would you blame it on the cam? no, you'd blame it on the computer...incorrect tune. same thing for the converter.
I did only minor tweaking to the prom, and was able to resolve all my lockup/unlock issues and i am now 100% happy with the torque converter (act 2400). I was able to knock off a 1.98 60-ft time in only my 7th 1/4 mile pass ever, with crappy street radial tires and stock rear suspension!
prom tuning really is worth it. keep the ACT and learn to tune the car to work with it, the way you want it to. you won't regret it. you can pretty much set up the computer to contol the converter any way you want.
another option, you could just switch to a vacuum switch controlled lockup...
