It takes Dexron II auto tranny fluid (ATF). I know, it seems silly to use ATF in a manual transmission, but the oil passages in it are smaller than where the normal 80W gear oil can go. If you look in the manual, you will see it takes about 3.5 quarts of fluid.

If you use synthetic, it will run smoother, but be a little louder.

Hope this helps

85 model T-5 has brass synchros. It should be filled with gear lube. Later model ones with the composition synchro clutches should use ATF. I highly recommend synthetic gear lube such as Mobil 1, Red Line, etc.; parts will last longer, the trans will run quieter, and you will get better gas mileage from the reduction in friction. Ignore the factory's (and everyone else's) confusion about the fill fluid; they changed back and forth in their recommendations a couple of times, even though the transmissions themselves are absolutely identical in every way from year to year, except for the change from the 1st design to the 2nd design (aka "World Class") which is when they went to the different synchro material. There are no oil passages in a manual trans, except for some holes to let fluid into some of the bushings. These are all the same size in all years of these transmissions also.

The thin stuff... 75W-90 or 80W-90, definitely not the 85W-140 or whatever it is, and not Lakewood BFL

Red Line MTL, Mobil 1, Valvoline synthetic are all ones I've used with good success. Others here might also recommend Royal Purple or Amsoil, I have never used either, they're probably just fine too.

Redline MTL is the way to go. I killed my first T-5 in just 30k miles. Replaced under warranty. Put another 30k on my relacement and it started making noises, too. I asked around and MTL was recommended. I figured "oh well, what do I have to lose?"

My car now has 171k miles, of which the last 36k have been behind my TF'd ZZ4 and the T-5 is still running like a champ,

89 Redline MTL for the above reasons I mentioned. My '90 has the WC T-5, too.

I know for a fact that Summit carries it, and I'm sure Jegs would to.

Hmmm... that doesn't work right... maybe if I disable smilies....

It takes about 3 liters to fill one up

HHHHmmmmmmm.......... still not right..... go to Summit's site, do a search, type in "MTL" as the keyword

Oops the guy that started this one was Swedish, I became temporarily Eurocentric...

yeah, about 3― quarts is typical, so I would get 4

Just wanted to let u guys know that the tranny I got was a 14 splines tranny.. for a V6 so I had to get rid of it. So Iīm back to zero again... I have called every junkyard and autostore to get a a new tranny here in Sweden.. with no luck.
The only way out of this misery seems is to import a gearbox from the states... It will cost alot
I think that after all this **** I have gone trough I will sell the Z28 and buy a Honda or something... so far this year I have burned at least $2000 and I cant still drive it.. I give up!
