Simple answer requires another simple question...

How much of the fluid are you changing?

If the trans and converter are completely dry, it takes about 23 pints. If all you do is drop the pan (leaving the converter and most of the internals full), it takes about 10 pints. If you at least take the cooler lines loose and blow them out, it will take another pint or so.

Elementary school units of measurement lesson:

1 quart = 2 pints

6 quarts = 12 pints

Service manuals always give trans capacities in pints for some reason

You'll be fine with what you've got.

ok i have to make a smart remark, you need as many quarts as it takes to fill it

now on a serious note, i "think" its about 5, if you are just dropping the pan, could be more or a little less, when i did mine i started with 4 quarts, then checked it and added, till it was full,

remember you can't check a transmission when the car is shut off and dead cold, its gotta be warm and idleing on flat ground

park, reverse, nuetral, drive. engage each position for about 10 seconds, then check it

Hey Mr. Don't, I am facing the same dellima with my 1990 Corvette. However. I decided to do it the old skool way instead of getting a bunch of misinformation. Listen Mr. Son, when changing your ATM fluid be sure to capture the used fluid in a drop pan, take a old ATM fluid bottle and measure every bottle of fluid that you take out (re-place)old skool!!!

Nice 15 YEAR thread necro , dude ..... And , while we're on the subject of stupid misinformation , your "method" sucks because it PRESUMES the transmission is properly full when you begin draining it , and in the real world , it is gonna be likely that a transmission or two out there just may have less than the right amount of fluid in it for any number of reasons .

God , and the General at General motors , both got together and decided that your transmission should have an easy and accurate method of determining the fluid level . This wonderfully simple device , known as a "Dipstick" , is to be trusted over any other nonsense such as measuring the old dino squeezins on their way out , relying on "Karma" , or using "The Force" .

PS , welcome to TGO ..... I think ...

ATM fluid
Can I use blinker fluid if my local parts store doesn't have version 6.3.1.4a of that? Or would it just be better to grease my Z71 muffler bearings at that point?
