If it's just for racing I would go with the TH350. The gears are a little closer which keeps the power from dropping off. The TH700-R4 has a nice low first gear which gets you outta the hole really easily, but it's tricky to learn how to handle the low first gear off the line.

I say go for the TH350.

The 700R4 also has a poor 1-2 gear spread. You have to over-rev first gear so when you shift to second the rpms don't fall below the torque curve. It's heavier and has more moving parts in it. For racing, you'll never use OD.

TH350 is much better for a strip only car. It's also easier to beef up than a 700R4. Depending on how much torque the engine produces, consider using a TH400. It's heavier than a TH350, has different gear ratios but is much stronger.

The 700R4 is an excellent street tranny with it's low first gear and OD but isn't really designed to be raced no matter how many people want to use it for racing.

The TH350 is the easiest swap if you had a 700R4. I originally had a 700R4. Used a TH350 for a couple of years then last winter built a TH400 with a transbrake.

My th-700r4 also recently gave up the ghost.
I had my th350 rebuilt for less than the Tax I would have paid
to fix the Th700.

Over drive is not much use at the drags so......

You'll need the B&M trans change over kit and a drive shaft
from a 82 to 84 Fbody with a V8 or V6 __ 3 speed auto trans car__. Your trans shifter will hook right up.

No question here. I liked the over-drive of the 700r4 on the street, but I can cruise pretty far on the money I saved by going
with a th350 instead.

Neither of these trans are designed to handle 600hp but;
since the th-350 is way cheaper to build and either are going to be a maintanance item, then the th350 will be better in the long run. Your car should be faster too.

When you are using the 9.5" or 10" TC the big drop off is not a problem. Remember the 700R4 1st to 2nd shift is almost identical to the Powerglide, with one big difference the 700R4 1-2 shift occurs when there is very little rolling & air resistance. I would not be concerned about this. I have the TH350 & 700R4's in 10 & 11 second cars. The one nice (big) thing about the 700R4 is the overdrive. Call me if I can be of help? 800 7763288 M-S 10-6 PST.
