FORD 9-inch in 87 IROC-Z

HI

I was wandering if anyone has ever swapped in a 9-inch into a 3rd gen. The 9-inch has been modified to fit into a IMCA circle track car but due to a rule change they arn't allowed to run a 9-inch with disk breaks, and I have a 4th gen rear with disks which they are allowed to run so I have it traded off for the 9-inch even. But I'm not sure what to do about the breaks. Will I need to change the perportioning valve or the fittings? My car is a 350TPI car with the factory J65 disk breaks. Iam trying to get the swap done asap so any help- would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks
Jeremy Sleeper_Z

Is the IMCA car a third gen? If not then you need to find some way to attach the torque arm.

If it was in a third gen, in what way has it been modified?

The IMCA car wasnt a 3rd gen but it does only have 2 trailing arms. There isnt a place tto mount the torque arm but i think i have that covered. I really just wanna know how will the Linolin disk breaks work on my car.

if your 9" isn't made for a thirdgen f body then i'd guess you'll need to cut all the brackets off and weld new thirdgen brackets on, plus provisions for the torque arm

I know that i will have to put on the brackets. I jsut wanna know how the breaks are gonna work. Will I have to get a new break line or will the calipers even work at all on a Chevy? I know all about swapping in the 9-inch and mopar 8 3/4 into F-bodys but i have never put one in with disk breaks.

Chances are that nothing is going to just bolt up. When you do any kind of a swap like that, stuff will need to be changed or modified to work.

My 9" uses ford drum brakes. I installed new lines on the housing and used a longer flex hose to connect the lines from the housing to the body. I think I got the flex hose out of a van.

My car originally had rear disk brakes. The master cylinder was replaced with a manual brake master cylinder out of an S10. The combination valve is still factory. Although I don't drive on the street I have no problem with braking at the end of the 1/4 mile. I can slow down quicker than when the car had 4 wheel disks. The ford drum brakes are huge compared to chev's.

You're going to need proper park brake cables. Again, until you get the diff in you won't know exactly what you'll need since there's no such thing as a simple swap.

im really not worried about the parking break stuff cause I have a 700R4 but I wandering if the break line fittings are the same? And the rear has 3.55 gears, and i do know that GM made a 3.54 gear in the corvette but what i dont know is if they only put that gear in the stick cars, or if i can get one new from GM for a 700R4. I thank you all for your help. Im sure Ill be on here with more questions in the neer future.

Jeremy

considering how easy adapters are to come by i wouldn't worry about the fitting size for more than a nanosecond
