2800 stall and 2.77 gears-good or bad mix
I will be replacing the 700-R4 in my 86 TA with a nicely built up version, and Im wondering if a 2800 stall converter would or would not work well with 2.77 gears?
Also, what kind of external transmission cooler would you guys reccomend? TIA.

well you might as well get that and put it in during the tranny swap... then you most likely want to look into gears some where down the road...

I thought I was the only one fool enough to do that. I have a 3000 stall 9.5" convertor with 2.73 gears. This is along with a peanut cammed LB9.
It is not bad, very driveable but there is no question that is has a convertor in it. If you are planing gears in the near future go ahead with the 2800. If you plan on keeping the 2.7x gears might want to tighten the stall up a bit to help with the low speed driveability.

I plan on upgrading to at least 3.27 gears in the somewhat near future.
Just curious since I have a peanut cammed LB9 as well, did the big converter completely kill low end torque? What kind of fuel economy are you getting with it?
Thanks again.

Better choice would be a 2400 stall convertor with the 2:77 rear.
even THAT is a bad idea if your cam is like a 2-6K powerband, like mine. i cant even spin the tires and I have 360 RWHP @ 5800 RPM.

Hey guys i have a big question , im deciding on the xe262 cam , port and polish my 305 lg4 heads, hooker supercomp long tube headers or shorties when time comes around, and i have a 9 bolt posi disk rear with 2.77 gears sittin in my garage. my question is that is i use this rear end with the 2.77 gears would a 2500 stall converter be good/great for my car? i also have a th350 tranny and the rest of my mods are in my sig.
i just dont wanna get ride of this rear becuz i really wanna use the disk brakes but if the gears are goin to suck for my set up i guess i will sell the rear.
but with the cam, heads, headers, stall, and rear end gears would this be some what streetable and have nice noticable power over my stock set up?
ive heard that i should stick with my 10 bolt and thor like 3.42 gears in it but i dunno which i wanna use yet. im just lookin for opions on this. thanx

The 9 bolt is slightly stronger than the 10 bolt but with a 305 that is not a concern. If you feel you need disk brakes on the rear, then the 9 bolt with 3.45 gears would be the best choice.
For day-to-day driving and the occasional quarter mile blast, drums are perfectly adequate. Thus the 10 bolt with 3.42s would be fine.
