did i get ripped off? help

hi

just had my dealer do some work on my 92 rs 305 tbi w/ 150 k miles.

they said the pinion seal needed replacement and they did differential service..

got home and looked under car, the differential cover (which has never been removed or serviced ,im the original owner) which is filthy dirty and greasy looks like it was not removed. the bolts are all still covered in dirt and grease.

also the torque arm at the differntial is filthy , i suppose from the pinion seal leak, and those bolts at the differential are dirty and do not look like they were removed.

is there any way to do this work and not touch these bolts? or have i been ripped off?

thanks john

seriously though, sorrty about the swears but if you want to get it fixed right, all you have to do is tell the guy to go **** himself and he will more likely then not give you your money back, or actually fix it.

I would go back to the dealer and point out the fact that you dont think the work that you paid for was done. The bolts on the diff cover look like they have never been removed, this will prob. upset the service manager if it a Chevy dealer because a Chevy dealer should have a higher standard for customer pay repairs vs warrenty repairs. I was a service manager at one time a local Chevy dealer and if that had happened, that tech would have been fired. (sorry to make this so long) but the 1st thing i would do is go back to the dealer and tell them your problem, if you get nowhere report them to the BBB. hope this helps and lets us know what comes of it.

or the sucked the fluid out through the diff plug and never opened the case but that still doesn`t fix the pinion seal so I would go ask what the deal is anyway.

a Chevy dealer should have a higher standard for customer pay repairs vs warrenty repairs.
Not true. The "standard" is to fix every car right, the first time, regardless of who foots the bill. Whether or not a particular dealer or technician feels the same way is a different story.

Some places will suck the fluid out through the fill hole and refill it as the "service". I compeletly dissagree with that, but I don't run that dealership. And remember, just because its dirty, doesn't mean it wasn't touched. I usually try and clean up the mess after a repair, but you have to realize, we are there to fix your car, not give you a detail service.

If the pinion seal stopped leaking, then I wouldn't question it, but if you feel like you were ripped off during the "differential service", then definatly go back and ask questions.

GMTech: I may have made a bad statement about the higher standard remark, what i was aiming at is that in my experiences a customer that has had a warrenty repair and brings it back for the same trouble will still be upset but someone who paid $200 dollars for the same repair and has to bring it back most of the time are really upset, and yes no matter what the repair weather warrenty or customer paid repair the standard should be the same, again i think i put the wrong statement in that post, sorry. also GMTech i noticed you are a ASE master tech, i am ase certified as well but could never pass the darn transmision part of the test. The dealer i worked for sent me to all the schools and when i was done they asked me to be the service manager and do a sort of diagnosis on the service lane to determin if we could make the repair while the customer waited or if they should leave the car with us for the day, but most of the time it took longer. again sorry for the remark made in my last post, must have been temporary stupidity takeing over.

Wyldbillracer: What you said makes sense and you are absolutely right. Its just like if you have ever noticed that when its warranty, they don't want the tranny fixed, they wanted it replaced. They don't want the engine fixed, they want a new motor. But as soon as its customer pay, they are all over the "fixing" it

You guys sure you cant change a pinion seal without taking the cover off? if you remove the nut and pull the yoke off the seal will be accessible. You slide hanmmer it out put the new one in reinstall the yoke, torque the nut. The ring gear should keep the pinion gear in place.

How much did you pay for the service? if it was less than a hundred bucks i don't think they would have taken the cover off or put new oil in.

Who said you couldn't? Two different repairs were supposed to have been done: Pinion seal replacement and a diff service (drain and refill). You don't have to remove the cover to do either, but personally, I always remove the cover to do the SERVICE. The pinion seal doesn't need the cover taken off.

just wanted some clarification, i spoke to the dealer and the tech said they suck it out (for diff service).

I just figures the cover should be pulled for a complete job.

thanks

that way they don't have to change tha gasket, just another of those " shortcuts "that people don't tell you about. if they had to change tha gasket for the price they gave you it would have cost then another 10 bucks. now if the gasket leaks you can pay them for that too.

this sounds to me like the front seal was replaced not the inside the diff [there are two seals]]so i think you got took because they should have replaced both only doing one is a half assed job in my opinionlter down the road the outer seal will go out andthe one inside will start to go bad.,.,see to replace the seal on the front of the diff the axel connects to a yoke that connects to the diffthat one can be replaced and the diff cover never has to come out

There is no such thing as a inner pinion seal, just the 1 and only outer seal.
