From auto to manual?

Ok, here's the deal...I am in the process of purchasing a (I believe) 700R4 Tranny, stall to 2500 RPM, and rebuilt in great condition....for 75 bucks . If/when this deal happens I would love to make it a 5 or possibly a six speed. Since I am only payin 75 bucks for, it can afford to drop 3-4 hundred to convert it...but my quesiton is...is it worth it or even possible? I LOVE manual's, and I want to keep my vehicle manual.

Also...what kind of tranny is the one in my car? (89 camaro RS 2.8L 5 speed)

so why even buy this trans other than to simply resell for more money?

you have a 5 speed transmission, its a manual which is what you want, i would leave well enough alone.

My transmission I have now is not strong enough for a 350 (so I am told). Also, I am getting the transmission, because, well, it is 75 bucks. If anything, I will sell it and buy a manual tranny. The whole point of the new tranny is so I can get a bigger motor later.

That whole thing made absolutely no sense to me. If you're talking about turning the 700R4 into a 5 or 6 speed, just go ahead and forget it now.

Ok, let me try to expain this again...

1) Im not knowledgable in transmissions, so this is just a question of is it possible.

2) I am buying this transmission because it is CHEAP (75 bucks). Can't pass up that deal for a good tranny.

3) I am assuming it is a 700R4 cuz he said it came out of an Iroc, but he also said street/strip in there, so iunno if it is aftermarket or not.

4) I just want to know if it is possible to take it from automatic to manual. From the posts I've gotten, it seems like its not possible.

5) The reason I got this crazy idea is that I want to put a new motor in my car and I have been told that my current tranny is not stout enough to handle a 305 or 350, but I want to keep my tranny manual.

6) If I cant change it, I'll either keep it and use it or sell it and save for a manual tranny that is compatable with a V-8.

Does this make sense to anyone now? Can you understand my question now?

yes makes sense now

If you have a manual now, there would be no sense to install a 700r4 in your car, that would mean a full swap. If it's a good deal on the trans and for 75 bucks then buy it and re sell it for a few more bucks if you think you can.

I think I understand what you mean and there is no way to ever turn an automatic tranny into a manual tranny .. and auto will always be an auto and a manual will always be a manual.

The conversion to an SBC is not worth it unless you do it yourself and you'er time is not worth much.

As for the tranny it sounds like you've got a T5 in their which would last for a while behind say a 305 depending how you drive it; but, in the main, it's not worth converting a 2.8 to an 8 cylinder uneless the there are exceptional circumstances.
