Running a 700r4 without lockup
I have a 85 iroc with the 700r4. I want to change it to a carb and get rid of the computer. So i want to run the tranny without the lock up torque converter, but iam worried that i will mess up the tranny if i do so. So can i do that or would i have to keep the computer to use the lockup.

i have a 700r4 raptor and i dont use my lockup. however you need to be sure what year your tranny is because they changed them in 85. 85 and later you could unhook the lookup but 84 and older will overheat.this is to the best of my knowlege and not based on 100% fact. see www.700raptor.com they can help you.
thanks

Well, the tranny was rebuilt about a year ago. Why i want to change is that the lockup comes in very very earlier. Do u think maybe i should get a tranny cooler.

I am in the a similiar situation. I replaced factory computer with the FAST system and now need to think about my lock-up. Painless wiring sells a product that allows you to use 4th gear lock-up without the computer in the 700R4. Summit part number is PFR-60109.

I don't think it will hurt it to run in unlock. I have a carb 84 Z28 and it used to go into lockup too soon. I put a toggle on the control line and run it around town with the switch off and in unlock. On the highway I switch and let it go into lockup. I have an 85 iroc with a 700 and a ecm. It likes to switch at 45 mph and sometimes I don't want it to do that. Where I live the road is winding and the speeds seem to be between 40 and 50 so it is locking and unlocking so once again I put in a toggle and leave it unlocked. Flip the switch on the highway and back into lock. So my guess it it won't hurt it.

There is a pink/blk wire ( 39 on wire diagram ) that goes from the ign to the brake switch, then on to the trans and back to the ecm where the circuit is completed on a ecm car. On a carb non ecm the wire goes to a vacuum switch in the engine bay and then to the brake switch. If you tap in anywhere before the brake switch with your toggle should do it. On my tpi car I hooked it up just before the ecm because it was easier for me as I had it out. That is a tan/blk wire 422 at the ecm.
