According to the Transgo site you only need normal hand tools to install the shift kit.
As for the reliability, I've heard two stories to this. One of them is a personal testimony from someone I've met in person.
Everyone raves about the TransGo shift kit, I've never read anything bad about it.
Some people have posted bad stuff about the B&M shift kit, but AJ_92rs has one in his tranny and he hasn't had any problems with it. Says it works great.

I got my kit from Thunderracing.com. I am very pleased with mine. The install wasn't all that bad, comes with paper and video instructions. All you have to do is make sure you take your time, and follow directions closely. It took me about 3-4 hours to complete it, but I also had to pull the pan again and I didn't know anything about trannies.

I have a trans-go kit in my tranny. I like it. Shifts normal at light throttle but shifts pretty hard at WOT I like it.
I say the best 2 mods to a 700r4 are the trans-go kit and a cooler...at least for mild engine

Probably a dirty job too. I'll be buying one of these in a while if this tranny holds up well.

I installed a trans-go shiftkit in my car last summer. Then I uninstalled it and reinstalled it about 6 more times because it didnt work right, with the same problems after each time.
I called trans go many times and they were pretty much baffled by the end. Look and my sig and you will see a probuilt trans now.
Install at your own risk.

I watched the video a couple times and I thought I could do it. Looks pretty simple you just need to take your time and dont rush.
I sold the kit and ended up getting a tranny that already had it installed. Made things easier for me.

At WOT it would not shift from 2nd to third gear, sometimes.
And a couple times when it was in OD and I went to WOT it would not go into 3rd, which should be impossible for this trans
Well that was my experience, there are a lot of people who have done this with no problems. And I watched that video many many times and step by step as I was doing it.
Well, personally I've never heard anything bad about transgo either, which is why I bought mine. I tried the whole install it yourself deal, didn't work for me. Everything went fine, just when I put it all back together it skipped 2nd and didn't go into OD. So I ended up taking it to a shop, having it installed right and got the tranny rebuild too. I would definately recommend taking it to a shop to have done because you'll get the best results that way and it saves you a bunch of time. Good luck! (BTW, it definately chirps in 2nd and I only have an 87 LB9)

i installed the transgo kit i got from summit. comes with video and manual, so i had a tv outside in my driveway. it was pretty simple. change some springs and valves, cover some holes in the separator plate, drill some holes in the valve body. and install the vette servo. i installed this on a tranny with 110,000 miles and it is still working. whould always chirp 2nd and 3rd would pull hard, this was all on a basicly stock 305tbi. so any more engine mods would of had 3rd chirping too.

i have the TransGo kit and it kicks ***! the B&M kit doesn't some with the 'Vett servo like the trans go kit. its more money and its well worth it. ($129.95 from sumit.com plus shipping) my friend has the B&M shift kit in his car and it shifts car but mine shifts a hell of a lot harder and it will chip the tires goign into 2nd and 3nd

ever time you see the video like pause for a sec thats when the guy is going "OH #%#%$! #%@ Damnit! son Of A $^!#@" LoL the trans go it is not for someone wo doesn't knwo what they are doing... installing it wrong will fry the trans
I have installed the transgo kit and I took the pan off 3 times and the VB 2 times and I can not find out why the auto will not shift into 2nd or 3rd or OD. I have nothing but reverse and 1st. I have posted here a few times and no one seems to be able to tell me a good answer. I have finnally decided to tow the '89 formula 350 to a tranny shop!! So much for saving money.

When I had my 700 rebuilt several months after I installed mine, They told me that I had a little too much space where I should have had a thicker shim, but I had all my gears. Except for reverse anyway. Turned out, the first time I put everything together, I had all 4 wheels off the ground, and when I tested for all gears, I have no reverse. But I fixed that, pulled the pan and found a valve, spring, spacer, and a few other items that I had not put the snap ring in right, so it didn't hold when it had pressure.
