T5 input shaft play??
T5 input shaft play??
With the tranny out of the car I was wiggling the input shaft (my fingers were where the pilot bushing goes) and there is a little bit of play. Is this normal? Should there be some play?? It probably moves 1 - 2mm side to side.
Also, does anyon know the torque specs for the pressure plate to flywheel bolts, it is not listed in the Haynes manual???
thanks.

I picked up a T-5 that had some play. I thought it would be OK but after the sucker was installed it turned out that it was no good. I wound up getting a rebuilt one that had no play and it worked great. If I were you I would not use it.

really? what was wrong with it? I have seen lots of t-5 trans and they all have a little play. it has to do with the way there is no real support to the input shaft untill the thing is in the car. a rebuilt one or one with very low miles will be tight of course but, once the bearings seat and it gets a little play

there should be NO endplay or side to side movement...
and there is support on the input...thats what those shims are for that go behind the input retainer...
if theres end play or side-to-side movement,, the shim is worn down..when that goes, the roller bearings on the inside of the input get play..then the input get nicked and gouged and its time forr an input...
i just went through this not 2 weeks ago...
the input should turn with a very slight drag to it..(when rebuilt)...as it gets broken in the drag will go away, but there still will be no play at all...

I was looking but, I can't find it the only one I can find right now is the tail shaft end play. (which is directly related to the input shaft) and that is for preload spec. only. I would ask our trans guy but, this is kinda like beating this to death here. they have some end play thats just there flaw. very little yes I agree he very well could have too much but, it needs to be mesured.

And it started going again about a month ago. The input was scored like posted above, so I just "patched the problem" for a bit.
That's why I just bit the bullet and got a rebuilt one.
