T-56 borg warner or tremec
alright here is my question, i have a tremec 6-speed out of a 96 camaro (or so im told) i was lookin up the slave cylinder for it and its the same one that 96-98 camaro's use, the internal one, ive checked with a few differnt ppl now and its the same answer i get from everyone, and to my knoledge u cant use a LS1 transmission in a 3rd gen, but only the LT1, and LS1 wasn't in a camaro in 1996...where can i go to find casting #'s i tried the dealership and some other places, and nobody has them, also can i still use this transmission?? i need the help please

ummm, can you rephrase the question, i dont quite understand what you have and what you want..?
if you're asking about the slave cyl setup, you need one for a LT1 car... one that matches whatever setup you're using...

alright, well i want to use this trans in my 88 firebird, but the fact it has a internal slave cylinder vs. external a problem?? i was talkin to someone today and they got a trans out of a 96 camaro, same as me, but he has a external slave not a internal, will it make a difference??? will i still be able to use it on a 3rd gen?? with the internal slave cylinder

to be honest, i dont know what all the lil diffs are. i do know they changed designs a couple times... as to what the changes are, i dont know. i dont work on enough manual tranny LT1 4thgens to compare...
i do know that the entire setup fits into the car.. no matter what LT1 style it is... so you dont have to swap anything if you already have a complete setup.

Here's the deal:
If the slave cylinder mounts around the input shaft (has the throwout bearing built into it) then it's an LS1 tranny and it won't fit anything but an LS1 or an LS6 because the front cover, bellhousing, input shaft, and clutch hydros are all different. The guy who told you it was a '96 trans probably didn't know what he was talking about. The '98+ trannys aren't as strong as the older ones anyway (this is popular belief....they have the same torque rating but everyone says it's easier to break an LS1 trans.)
If the slave cylinder mounts to the bellhousing, on the lower left side of the trans, then it's an LT1 tranny and it's exactly what you need.

who ever told u that the older transmissions are stronger was wrong. a 4L60E has a torque rating of 60 on a 0-90 scale, get a new 4L85E, thats much better, has a lot better internally designed parts too

I said the older T-56s were stronger. The 4L60E and 4L85E are both automatic transmissions, which hadn't been mentioned at all until your post.
Also what's with the 0-90 scale? I prefer a nice, objective rating like 450lbft (for the 94-97 T-56.)

The T56 was originally manufactured by Borg/Warner and built in the USA. Now Tremec owns the transmission division of Borg/Warner and the transmissions are built in Mexico.
All '93-'97 F-car T56s have external hydraulic slave cylinders. All '98-'02 T56s from the F-car use an internal hydraulic throwout bearing. You have a later trans from an LS1 car.
You can buy the bellhousing from GM or another Tremec parts dealer. You will need a cutom made pilot bushing, because the input shafts are different lengths. The simplest thing to do is fabricate a hyrdaulic system using the exisiting throwout bearing. McLeod has all the parts you should need. You may be able to use the hydraulics from an LS1 car, but I can't verify if this will be a bolt in like the LT1 setup.
Basically you aren't totally SOL. It will jut take a bit more finageling to get an LS1 T56 into your car than it would be an LT1 T56. Swap parts are also hitting the market for the LS1 to 3rd gen...
