9 bolt posi acting funny
9 bolt posi acting funny
Well, my posi has always made a bit of a whine noise since i have had it and the guys at the local shop said it had a bit of play in it but nohting that bad. A few times i have hammered my car from a stop and it felt like it was slipping. Thought it was the trans but the trans is fine at wot all the time when done from a roll. So two nights ago i go into the empty lot across the street and hammer it and what u know only one tire spun. But today i had my g/f in the car and i hammer it from a stop and the car seems to take off then slip again and the rpms kinda stayed high. I get out of the car and this is what i see: It looks like the posi was working and started to lay down 2 patches then all of a sudden the drivers side patch stops about 3 feet and i have about a 25 foot patch from the other side. Tried to search and couldnt tell if this was normal or not. Any suggestions?
Sounds to me like the posi is on it's way out. When the clearances get too big getween the cones this is how the posi will act until you eventually have no posi at all. The rear end will still function okay you will just not have posi. This is where mine is at right now. -John

hmmm. you guys think this is y my rpms are shooting up sumtimes when i hammer it at wot from a stop? COuld my 2600 with a stall with 2.77 in the back cause me to spin even into second without getting traction? I know the gears in the rear suck but im just hoping my tranny isnt slipping. it doesnt/has never slipped when hammering it from a roll so im suspecting the rear.

9 bolt rears use cone type differential. There is no clutches, those are in auburn type differentials. You'll need to shim the cones to bring it back like new. email larry burd, he sells the shims. Look for my 9bolt info post in the faq section for info on how to do it, or any other bit of info you'd ever want to know about a 9bolt rear.

How involving is this? I have the axles out of my 9 bolt right now and im in the process of painting it and swaping to PBR brakes, Im guess I would need to totally remove the carrier?
