Replacing a Torque Converter
Hey All.
I think my torque converter is in need of replacing. Whenever I am coming to a stop the car seems to drop RPM pretty low and then sputters to bring it back up to 600. Also when I put it in reverse and start applying the gas, the moment I let off on the gas and the car starts to slow down it tries to stall out on me again. I had it stall twice. Lately what I have been doign is I put it in reverse, get the speed I want and then drop it into neutral and then drive and go and when I am coming to a stop I drop it in neutral if I am gonna be sitting there long (red light). These things in my mind seem to be due to a ceasing converter.
SO!! I am thinking of getting a new torque converter but I have a few questions.
1) what is all involved in replacing the converter.
2) should I get a stock TC from GM or get an aftermarket one
3) if aftermarket, which brand?

I don't know why you think it's the torque converter, based on your post I don't think it is. But, having killed 1 transmission and 2 torque converters, buy a good one. If you are planning lots of mods, lots of power get a Vigilante or a Yank. If you aren't planning on major power or don't want to spend that kind of money then I'd recommend a TCI, even though I just killed one.

might be that the torque converter is not unlocking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you disconnect the connector on the tranny the computer wont be able to ground it out and therefore never be able to lock the converter? If I'm understanding this correctly, that should prove whether or not it is due to the converter not unlocking.
