Yup, it'll fit but do you need it? I'd stick with a 700r4 if you're not going to be pushing a lot of power.

You'll have to make/buy a crossmember, and make/buy something to hold the torque arm (or make/buy a substitute for it), since one of these cars won't work without it. You'll have to change your dirve shaft length and the front yoke that's on it, because a 400 uses a different output spline. If you want automatic kickdown, you'll have to make/buy/find a switch to go somewhere that the throttle linkage or gas pedal or something will operate it at somewhere near WOT.

You can buy the crossmember, but it isnt cheap. If you are going to use the 400 you are better off just to buy some lift bars, and bag the damned torque arm in the first place. As for a kickdown cable, you may be able to buy an adjustable one and hook it where your TV cable was, I dont know. Its not cheap, its not easy. And the 400 has a crappy first gear.

The 400 doesn't have a kickdown cable, it has a kickdown switch. It doesn't have a throttle valve cable, it has a vacuum modulator. No cable of any kind whatsoever in fact.
The one I just got through driving back from lunch (74 Caprice convertible 454) has its kickdown switch in the car interior, on the gas pedal bracket. Another big block car I own (69 Chevelle SS396 convertible) also has it on the gas pedal. Most of them are there. A few cars had them on the carb but most were in the interior.

I have a th400 in my camaro. You can get a kickdown switch aftermarket. Lokar has a really nice one. It runs about $59. I converted mine with a shift kit and only run it as a full manual now. So don't have to deal with the kickdown

PLUS on top of kickdow cost, crossmember cost, TORQUE converter cost, torque arm cost, driveshaft cost.... you also have shifter cost......
It can be a costly swap and unless you need it NOT WORTH IT>>>

Mine had it in when I got the car. The crossmember was a welded together piece(not real pretty) I pulled it off and cleaned it up and redid the piece to the tork arm and it works really well. The crossmember also sits back on the frame from the original cm location about 5"
also it still used the stock shifter. I added a B&M Megashifter.
