HELP! Trans won't stay in park
HELP! Trans won't stay in park
wowwwww am I frustrated!
The other day I was drivin my 91 Camaro RS (305) to hockey and when I parked and let off the brake, it started pulling forward...I was like WTF??? so I slightly tapped the shifter down and it went right back into overdrive.....so it seemed like it was sticking or something.
Well today I was in my friends driveway and it's on a slant...so when I went to put it in park I started goin backwards......my car was stuck in reverse and everytime I put it in park and let off the brake it would just go back into reverse!!! Finally after about 5 minutes of trying to shift it from R to P and D to P....it finally stayed still and went into park.
I was scared as hell when I knew I had to stop in my driveway.....so sure enough when I put it into park it went backwards into reverse.......and after 10 long minutes it finally went into park and I put the E-Brake on and logs under the tires.
I'm so scared that I'll have to get a new transmission because I'm suffering financially bad enough as it is.....so has anyone had this problem or possibly know a solution for it?
Thank you sooo much

Sounds like the parking pawl isn't engaging with the parking whatchacallits in the transmission, and slipping out. Is it making a kank kank kank noise as it moves while you hold it in park, or is it just slipping right out as soon as you let go? Definitely take it to a shop to inspect... Good thing your e-brake works, right?

You just need a shifter cable. Don't mess with the trans, I bet there's nothing wrong with that (at least as far as parking is concerned), just try a cable first.
awesome!!!! Thanks a lot guys!
It's such a relief that I probably won't be needing a new transmission lol...
tomorrow I'll be going to autozone to get a new shifter cable.....now seeing as I've never done anything like this before, does anyone have any pictures that could assist me?
Thanks again!

pull up the console and check there. The cable has a rubber ring that mounts on the metal plate near the shifter. My tranny wouldnt shift into park and it was because the rubber had come out. I think you can also adjust the placement of the actual shifter which would adjust the shift cable position on the tranny. There should be a couple of bolts that you can loosen and move the shifter a little.

Had to take nearly the entire console apart and sliding it in from above. It wont go in from the front or back and if you force it you can tear it up. Just slide that little rubber piece in from the top. Where the rubber is split to allow you to mount it. I took the entire radio pod off in my T/A and had to wrestle the main console up a little by loosening things to get it where I could just slide that thing into the mount. I think it would be easier to change out the transmission than just that stupid cable. Just take your time and make as much room as you can.
Just take it apart and put it in then put the console back together. Its a lot easier than fighting with it and making another trip to the parts store for a 2nd one. HAHA
Just saw you have a camaro. I think your console is 1 piece so it doesnt come apart. It may make it a little harder. I wasnt worried about tearing up my console as it is already crap. Be careful with it.
