Confused about my rear

For starters picked up a 10 bolt rear out of an 89 Iroc found it for 100 bucks. I had it in my 87 Z28 for about a year and the posi unit went bad so I bought the slp unit before i took out the rear. Today i took the rear to the shop and he told me and i saw that the slp unit was MUCh smaller than the unit in the car. It has 3.54 gears and the PBR brakes, but the thing is i just don't understand why the SLP unit is so much smaller. Anybody go info on what rear this might be? I have to get a new posi unit so the guy can throw it back together for me. Thanks

If this is the one that they sell for $99 it is a zexell torsen unit from the 4th gen. They never wear out because they have no clutches. Yeah they look smaller but they fit fine as long as you have 28 spline axles. My 89 WS6 had 26 spline axles so I bought a pair from Moser when when I got the Torsen T2R.

Yea it is a lot smaller, but the axles and the ring gear don't fit onto it they are too big for the slp unit. I heard something about the austrailian something or other but I thought that was the 9 bolt.

Also I found out today that it has Dana stamped on the ring gear and the posi unit is called a trac lock. The guy at the shop thought it might be from a TTA, but he has never seen one before so he isn't really sure. Anyone have any clue on this?

Isn't 3.55:1 a 9-bolt ratio??

EDIT: okay, looks like 3.45:1 is a 9-bolt ratio.. hmmm

It's a 3.54...Don't know the ratio numbers as the rear isn't at my house right now but im positive it came out to 3.54. I just don't know what this rear could be. I'm going to try and get a picture of it tomorrow when i go over to the shop. The guy said it looks like a rear out of a TTA, but it isn't a 9 bolt so i didn't think it was.

Does anyone know if there are rebuild kits for the dana 44's trac lock posi. The dana is the only thing it could be, it has the bolt in axles and its the 30 spline posi unit. I see in the jegs and summit mags there are several different kinds of 8.5'' rears I just don't know which one is the right one.

3.54 is a ratio I had in a Dana 60 years ago, but it was 9 3/4 with 35 spline axles.

Try looking through there and see if you can identify it by the number of ring gear bolts and the threads; a pic of the cover would be conclusive; a pic of the whole rear might even help.

There's no mistaking that; it's a Dana 44.

Try this for parts http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com...s.php?catid=15

It was a hundred plus a hundred for the brakes, the guy thought it was just an Iroc rear...so did I. I ordered one of drivetrain.com i think for a trac-lok. I don't know if it's the right one or not. It's part # 706352X.

trac lock is a mopar/ jeep term check a mopar dealer for the clutch packs or do a search for mopar performance online. they'll have it. if it will fit right id say the dana 44 is a strong rear.

torsen diffs arent rebuildable like the clutch pack ones are. and if your car is seeing any track duty id say stay away from the zexel. youll break it

Yes. I believe the Firehawks got 44s, but I'm not sure what else did or might have.
