Adjusted the TV cable, Now Tranny Shifts Hard
I just adjusted my TV cable by the process explained in the Tech Archives. I held the Tab in and moved the cable housing towards the front of the car till it stopped. I then opened the throttle fully, yet the tv cable did not ratchet into place. I drove the car, and it shifted harder than ever. I barely had to touch the pedal and it took off. Is this how it should function normally, or is my unit defective because it remained fully extended Please let me know, I have to be to work in a couple hours and I don't want a problem on the way there.

If it didn't ratchet forward at all, your cable may be stretched. It sounds like it's working better now than it was, though.

I think you got it backwards.....
You want to get the little plastic center part that comes through the connector to be all the way back inside the part that connects to the bracket. That way when you push the throttle wide open it ratchets some of that center plastic part out towards the fromt of the car so that some of it shows....

I followed the procedure as described in the haynes manual. With the nub fully extended foreward(towards the front of the car, I was unable to downshift to my lower gears at WOT. At the original location it seemed to bobble back and forth between gears. After playing around with it for a while, I decided to advance the nub foreward acouple clicks from the originol position. It seems to run the best there. If the self calibrating mechanism fails, should I adjust by feel, or should I put it back to where it origionaly was?

I'm pretty sure you need to adjust it towards the mounting tab which is would mean pushing it back towards the firewall. I pushed the metal tab in and compressed the nub, opened the throttle, got a click and it shifts great.

I don't know the technicalities of the TV Cable, but I was able to optemize my shifts by trial and error. My cable doesn't ratchet itself , so I played with it till it shifted better. Whether my cables worn out, I don't know, but I believe that manuel adjusting may be all you need. Mark the notch with some white out then progressively move the cable notch by notch.(The further the nub is extended towards the front of the car, the more likely the tranny won't downshift with WOT. The closer the nub is to the cable housing, the more likely the tranny will shift at lower RpMs. Unless you definately know that your cable is worn by fraying, the trial and error method should work out fine, or at least it did for me. Good Luck
