shifting problem

I have a 700R4. After i rebuilt the engine ( i pulled the engine and tranny at the same time) I reconnected it all together and dropped everything back in. The only thing i touched of the tranny was i added a corvette servo. Anyway, now the tranny cant go into 1, 2, itll get into D, and will miss everything else (P, OD and N)...is there an adjustament for the cable on the shifter?...b/c ill move the shifter and watch it underneathe the car..and it wont move the lever on the tranny..

sounds like the shift cable housing came out of the bracket. i had the same thing happen to mine. i found the tabs on mine wouldn't stay in the bracket that bolts to the pan rail any longer. if you can, get one from the dealer. or at least not autozone. the one i got there wouldn't allow me to shift into 1st and 2nd. i have recently installed a B&M megashifter. i love it.

sorry bout that. wasn't thinking.

your shift cable housing fits into a bracket at the transmission pan rail(driver's side). there are two tabs that hold the shift cable housing in this bracket. the tabs get worn and don't hold the cable in the bracket anymore. when this happens, the cable loses the tension requied to shift the transmission. when you pulled the transmission and engine, you had to either remove the bracket from the pan rail, or remove the shift cable housing from the bracket. if you removed te cable housing from the bracket, you may not have gotten it back in all the way. if you have any more questions, just ask.

Ok i get what you mean and what your talking about

Ok when i removed it from the car...i unbolted the entire assemlby from the pan ( i was gunna drop the pan on the tranny to drain any fluids that might be stuck in there)

so that cable was just hanging for like 5 months...with the weight of the bracket on it...maybe it did loosen it or hurt the tabs.

so if i go to get a new 1 what would i ask for?

just ask for a shift cable assembly for an automatic. you wil have to reuse your bracket if you get one from an autoparts store. i don't know about the dealer. a new assembly will come with a new boot where it passes into the the console. the dealer/auto parts store will ask you the typical year/make /model to get you the right assembly.

yuk!!!! i didn't think about one doing that but it would have the same effect. the shift cable is a one piece assembly.

there are two tabs that look similar to the ones in your picture. i don't have a camera to take a pic of my old one. i think the tabs are more flat on the tranny end.

ok...kool. then it is just a matter of adjusting it now. loosen the bolt the not that holds the cable end onto the transmission shift lever and see if you can get it to move towards the rear of the car without moving the shift lever. then retighten the nut. this will help it engage in park better.

the cable will not fit too far back but if it is on to far forward it will cause problems. the bracket should be attatched to the pan in the 2nd and 3rd bolt holes from the rear(3rd and 4th from the front) on the drivers side.

i was also counting the bolt hole on the rear corner. if you are not counting this one, then you need to move your cable bracket back one hole. the front of the bracket should be on the 3rd bolt hole from the front.

rubber boot

yeah, that boot is a pain in the butt. all it does is keep the shift cable from rubbing the metal of the tunnel. i'm going to play with my own ride so i will check back later. btw, i didn't get the boot in mine all the way either.

Hows this look...it just looks like the cable is on such an angle as it goes to the shift lever...but hell..it works...no problems so i guess its the right way then?

hey bud, it looks just like mine did when it was factory. that was why i got confused about the bracket placement. i'm using B&M megashifter now and it uses the two holes i originally told you to use. yeah, big brain fart. i'm glad you got it taken care of. i'll catch ya later.
