T5 Problems...

T5 Problems...
Hey Everyone,
I did the T5 swap about a month ago. I put in a new clutch, throwout bearing & pressure plate. I drained all the fluid and toped it off with Mobil One Synthetic ATF. The trans worked great for about 3 weeks. Then it began to get hard to shift into 1st & reverse and it whined loudly after I would downshift. I checked the fluid & saw that I was about a quart low. It looks like it has a leak somewhere because there is fluid on the outside of the trans. I added the quart that it was low & it helped some. It was easier to get into gear & the whining got quieter. A as the new few days went by another problem arose that has been getting worse & worse. If I let the car sit at idle with the trans in neutral, the transmission makes howling noises and the engine runs very rough. As soon as I put in the clutch, the howling goes away & the engine smooths out. While driving, there seems to be no problems at all!
The trans was used. Its a world class T-5 from a V6 Car.
Whats going on? Is the tranny toast?

definitely sounds like input shaft bearing. would explain why it stops making noises when you push the clutch in.
My T-5 whined in 1-3 for the last few months I had it from running it low on fluid once. Luckily no serious damage and the whining never got any worse and no new noises popped up.

Get a manual. There is a fill plug and a drain plug on the sides of your tranny. Fill it untill a little fluid comes out of the hole, and your good.

Whats an input shaft bearing going to cost me? Can I fix it myself? What is invloved? Should I just go get a used trans out of a V8 car?

the bearing is pretty cheap like maybe 20-30 bucks. but the labor to put it in with the trans out of the car is gonna be like 100-150 depending on the trans shop...but then they're gonna tell you other parts are worn most likely, n try n squeeze more money out of you
if you own a metric socket set, a rachet, a pin punch and a few snap ring pliers...you could probably do it yourself,

When a bearing gets damaged it is usually going to damage the surface it mates with so be prepared to replace the input shaft or other parts along with the bearing. This does NOT mean the shop is trying to "squeeze" money from you it just means they are trying to do a complete repair and not half *** anything. That is unless you consider your car only worth a half fix???...

if so just ask to see the old parts and why they are worn

If you do not trust the mechanic you have chosen to work on your car than that mechanic should probably not be working on it...

i work in a shop myself so i dont have to worry about finding a honest place to go...im just saying i know the business and we all know how often you hear people say how hard it is to find an honest mechanic these days

I know that feeling. I never know where to take my car to get worked on. I dont trust anyone. It seems everyone is either trying to rip me of or just doesnt know what the hell they are doing. That is why I do most of my repairs/mods myself. I would rather screw it up doing it myself than let someone screw it up or overcharge me for it.
