top speed

I have a 92 305 tbi rs, my buddy has a 86 305 tpi. He can get his car up to 140 mph without breaking yellow, mine yellow lines around 110. The cars came with the same rear gears, both automatics, is there maybe a different gear ratio in the trans?

trans had the same gears throughout the entire production AFAIK, uless he has a modded trans.

Check your RPO codes, It was probably either ordered with a different rear or someone has swapped the rear.

Edit:

Just though of it, but maybe your lockup isnt engaging and your buddys is...

The 92 RS has a governer on the top speed. Was because of the tires it came with origionally. They were not Z rated so GM had to protect their ***.

Wide open throttle in the RS will not let the transmission shift into 4th gear. With a stock rear, 3rd should let you go way past 110. I've had mine up there on ocaccion but only after a different chip in the computer.

Yea my car has that governor. How would I know if my tcc isnt locking? Can you feel it when it unlocks? Because sometimes when im driving around hilly areas, itll bog in OD, and ill drop it into D and it feels like it drops twice. I wonder if someone has put different gears in my car. This 4500rpm at 110 has to stop though. I drive it on the Autobahn and I really want to hammer it but I cant. I know I can disconnect the governor, but whats the point?

There are several methods that will allow the trans to hold 4th at WOT. There is the b-body 3-4 upshift fix kit from GM. There is also a mod to the TV sleeve that will allow 4th to be held. Do a search here using some of the words as keywords. There is a bunch of info on this. And yes, I agree with you, not being able to hold 4th is putz.

I used the b-body fix kit which also includes a larger boost valve. Between that and the aluminum driveshaft, I really need to keep an eye on the speedo. . .

top speed is not related to the governor in the tranny at all. it is all in the programming in the ecm.

sonnax and transgo both make kits that allow wot upshifts into 4th gear.
