700r4 rebuild and upgrade questions
hi guys i'm going to be having my 700r4 out of my 1992 camaro rebuilt here sometime in the near future and was wondering what you would reccomend.
I plan on having a 305 with 300hp in front of it at first and maybe next year have almost 400hp out of the same motor I'm going to beat on both of these pretty hard so i want it stirdy but, i still don't want to get to pricey.
i found a rebuild kit with the red alto clutches and 9 clutch pack and all the steels and everything for 250 through oregon transmission (type in corvette servo and they are the guys that sell it for the most part)seems to be the best rebuild kit out there that i've saw yet what do you think? I'd like to build the tranny to take 400hp minimum so it can take a beating.
i was also going to go with the corvette servo and .500 boost valve along with a big tranny kooler.
Anything else i should realy think about like the 13 vane pump or the sunshell, 5 pinion planetary gears or such.....
I'd rather not get a shiftkit as i'm sure the corvette servo, .500 valve, and better clutches will be plenty hard for me and i'd like to keep the full rebuild and buildup under 500$ for parts. The full rebuild kit is 250, the corvette servo is 15, 10 for .500 boost valve, 40 for 13 vane pump, 100 for 5 pinion planetary gears you get the idea....... I'd rather not buy everything if i don't have to.

Go to http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/custo...&cat=19&page=1 this is a very complete kit and addresses all of the common problems with the 700R4. The 9 clutch 3-4 pack from Alto does not work well, and the Trans-Go 'Modified" Performance Shift kit )comes with the larger boost valves & Corvette servo) works extremely well when installed correctly. The 13 vane setup will not retrofit without losing oil volume. 5 pinion planets are not necessary as 4 pinions are not breaking now, save your money here. The late GM heat treated sunshell or the Sealed Power Beast sunshell will do what you need. If you have any questions, let me know?

thanks figured i'd end up back at your kit t/y for the info as usual. Yah i hadn't heard much about the alto clutches (guess that's because they weren't all that they were cracked up to be).
I'll just go all out and buy that kit come mid summer probably...
Unless my fairy *** mother happens to drop one on my front porch (that'd be nice!!!).

Pro built: can you elaborate on the problems with the red alto/kolene steels? I have nver used them but a few guys I know with mustangs and C-4's they have worked great.
How much power will the borg warner clutchs and steels hold?

are you taking it on the street? i would think about the th350 if you never want a problem for cheap. but, for the 700 i would def get a beast with that power output.
Each transmission has its likes & dislikes when it comes to clutches. Example; The Powerglide has hardly any problems with any style of clutch. The Th350 3rd gear clutches from Alto work pretty good, but the 2nd gear clutches, not so good. The C-4 (I'm working on one now) works fine with the Alto Reds & Kolene steels. On the TH400 the The Borg Warner Hi-Energy's work very well, and the Alto Reds, work somewhat ok, but not as good as the BW Hi-E's. On the 700R4 & 4L60E, the 3-4 clutches (red) do not hold up well. The Borg Warner Hi-Energy's work exceptionally well here. With nine 4L65E Borg Warner Hi-Energy clutches, (in the 700R4/4L60E's) it will hold about 675-700HP. But remember, it is the Trans-Go Performance Shift kit, 9.5" torque converter, accumulation, etc., that contribute to the success of the 3-4 clutch pack, not just the clutches alone. This is an oversimplfied statement of what happens, but this should suffice for the time being. Can I make the Alto Reds work in different areas where they do not work well now? Sometimes, but I try to find what works best in each unit, as no two are alike.

Even if it doesn't hold up the od is a priority for me unfortunately as this is my only driver and needs to get decent gas milage while driving 65 mph + i've taken a liking to the super low 1st gears on a 700r4.
ps. it will be all street driven with a max torque of say 450ft lb. Maybe will see some autocross and a few dragstrip launches but, that's it.
