Need some schooling on axle rebuilding

I found out my Posi units was toast to I just removed it to rebuilt. I have a Ratech rebuild kit installation kit and Eaton Truetrac I need to install into my 10 bolt. Maybe it was wishful thinking, but the kit didn't come with any instructions. Is there a recommended book out there that covers rebuilding this axle?

I just used my haynes and Helm, not a lot of parts in there.

Just gotta know how to reset the backlash probably, etc.

I highly recommend a solid spacer rather than the crush sleeve (unless ratech gave you the spacer).
Girdle too.

Lemme know if you have any specific problems, I did mine in the fall.

Thanks Sonix. I'm reading up on your threads, to learn how to do this. Gotta a couple of questions for ya.

The cross shaft doesn't want to come out. How did you coerce this sucker?

Where can I get main cap studs? ARP apparently doesn't sell these and Summit didn't know either.

Are 28 axle splines a significant upgrade? I ordered the 26-spline for my car, not thinking about upgrading the axles, but now that everything will be apart I'm thinking it would be a good idea, though I've spent too much $ on the car thus far.

Thanks for your help.

tap the cross shaft with a hammer or punch, you do have the bolt out right? 28 spline axles would be a good up grade. don't think i ever seen studs for the rear caps. there's a chance you could find s head bolt stud to be the correct length or find studs from an industrial source.

TA performance has the cap studs. They're cheaper if you buy their girdle too.

Yea, I beat the crap out of my cross pin, had to rotate it so that when I hammered it inwards, I could still rotate it and grab part of it. Do it so you're driving the side with the hole in it, outwards. The hole being where the 5/16" headed bolt was. After that's out a ways you can pry in that hole, to slide it out. It was a big PITA. Removing the carrier was even harder.
I'd use a new crossshaft, since your's may be beaten up once you get it out. A stock one, or GM one is about $14. Don't ask what I paid for a zytanium one, I don't recommend that choice.

Rear End Girdles

TA1809 is the cap
TA1815 is the bolts, $20 if you buy the cap, $25 if not IIRC.

Which brand of axles?

If you still have the choice I'd recommend superior brand. They are hardened after machining giving them much more strength. Virtually the same price at $211 for the pair.
