Gears....GM 10 bolt...
I am aquiring a 1991 Camaro RS...
has a 10 bolt rear drum.... the back brakes dont mater much to me... it they bother me, i'll just swap to a 4th gen rear or something later...
my question is, what spline did they originally come with, what series carrier did they originally come with? current gears should be 2.73(or 2.77) not sure...
I am swapping to a 3.42... not a huge difference but enough to make my cruise speed in 5th gear match my engine's cruising rpm...
thanks..

cheaper to find a good used rear end in the gear ratio and posi options you are looking for than spending $600-800 to have a new set installed.

a new carrier with new gears will fit. Just make sure you get the 28 spline version.
If you have the tools to install new gears (magnetic base), and are willing to do it yourself, it might be worthwhile.
If you just want the 3.42 ratio, and don't have your heart set on the aftermarket posi, you can always follow xpndble's advice. Not sure of sources for 3.42 gears with a posi, I think the late 3rd gens had lower gear #'s then that, and the V6 cars had the higher ratio but no posi, so...

Stock I was a 2 series 2.73. I thought I was told when getting mine done that, a 2 series could only go up to a 3.23.(maybe I'm wrong) And upgrading to a series 3 I could go with a 3.73 or a 4.11. I didnt want to go 2.73 to a 3.23.....I wanted bigger.
4.11 is a little over kill with a 700r4 though. 1st gear is low enough with my 3.73!

With a 4.11, 1st gear would be so short.
