700r4 install kicking my @$$
Putting in an 87 model 700r4 into my 85 Z28 and I got it up by the motor and now need to mate them. Sounds easy but I ran outta light and wife lost my droplights. So went at it with flashlights to no avail. Will be on it first thing tomorrow in the am, this is the first tranny I've ever took more than a day to remove and install.

Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
this is why i spent $1500 to get mine built up bad azz and installed, i helped my friend swap his 700r out on his camaro, let me tell you.....one tool..... well 3, LOL that will save the @$$ you refer to....... a "transmision extention" for your socket wrench (any parts house that knows can get you one) its aprox 18" long, a wobble (or swivle) whatever you want to call it, and your socket wrench.......a good friend is optional but USEFULL to help...... its still a pain but it will make it a little better.....a beer or some good whisky can help wase the mind, dont drink to much you will have your trans mouned up to the garage wall or something crazy

Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
I feel your pain. It took me and my friend 2 days to drop my Silverado 700R4
out of my T/A, and I've taken the tranny out of my car before. It took a day just to swap my T/A governor, put in a new front seal, install a drain
plug kit, and swap out speedo gears. We just got the 91' 4L60 in the car today, and we still have to bolt the crossmember, torque arm,and put the top tranny to engine bolts in, not to mention add fluid and see if the thing does
what it is supposed to do. And the 700R4/4L60 isn't exactly a lightweight
transmission. Try balancing a transmission that weighs 180 lbs. on a floor jack, while jacking it up into position, keeping it lined up, and moving it forward all at the same time. And try doing all this while under your 3200 lb.
F-Body on your stomach or back. Tomorrow will be day 6, and the old Bird
should be back on the road by noon.

Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
Got the beast finished earlier today and the tranny I got is doing very well. I will be giving it a nice test run tomorrow. I have done many many transmissions and this by far was the hardest one I have ever done. It wasn't the size of the tranny or weight it was the little that things that don't go right. I had to remove the tv cable with tranny in because I forgot to check the gasket and it leaked, torgue converter bolts took a while to line up, and the top tranny line kept leaking and it took a bit to get it right. Never the less I kept at it and the hard work was worth it. Thanks for all the info on this site would have been a longer job without it.

Glad to hear that you got it in. I got mine finished up today at about 2:30 pm.
So far so good, it does what it's supposed to do. Let us know how your test run goes.

Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
=( Mines still in parts. hehehe I got it going, just got to find time this weekend to get back on it. Once the input drum is in, Im smooth sailing from there (knocks on wood). Then I get to re-live the experience of being on the cardboard-on-concrete install once again. =) yay
Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
So far so good. Shifts right and all but this tranny doesn't seem to have the low end my other on had. Would this be because I didn't change the valve body or other parts? Overall I am very satisfied but if there is a simple fix to restore that low end take off I will do it.

Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
Did you change the converter and how does it shift at all throttles?
Re: 700r4 install kicking my @$$
WAs shifting fine a little quicker than I liked at WOT but I wasn't mad seemed like it was supposed to be like that. Dam thing just took a dump now not shifting to 3rd or 4th again. See my new thread for details.
