Iunno..

I usually charge myself about $1250. I take it out of my left pocket and put it in my right. Makes me feel REAL GOOD and REAL PO'ED all at the same time. Kind of like using your MasterCard to pay your Visa bill.

Re: cost to replace clutch ?

I would say about $350 to $400 for the labor where I am at in a reputable transmission shop. They have to pull out the transmission and drive shaft to do the job.

HEY!!! Watch it bud! I resemble that remark!

Even at his advanced age though, it's never too late to learn how to do things for himself. Could come in handy at retirement time.

Too true Sofa. I did my first clutch job at the tender age of 16 in a carport, in the middle of January, with about 3 inches of ice to lay on. It took 2 entire days that first time. Man, that was soooo long ago. I remember looking at some old mechanic all cross-eyed and confused when he told me I'd need a clutch alignment/pilot tool. Lol. Now I can do one in 2-3 hours. If you're going to own a RWD, V8 powered car with a manual trans, it should be considered an intitiation, or a rite of passage if you prefer, to learn how to replace the clutch. At the very least, you'll walk a lot straighter afterward if you pay the "family friend" one Ben Franklin and a couple of six packs, versus how much a shop is gonna ream you to do it.

and I can also walk away straight, with a bunch of inherited knowledge, because this guy knows everything there is to know. Rebuilt 2 Chevelles, 68 and 69 respectively, owned a black second gen camaro, and right now putting the last few touches on his 68 Beaumont

Sounds like he oughta be able to help you plenty. I popped my "clutch cherry" on my 69 Camaro way back when. Other than the hydraulic clutch linkage, it's virtually the same job on a thirdgen, piece of cake. In fact, the shifter's even easier to deal with on a thirdgen since you just undo 4 bolts and pop it out of the trans. The Hurst Comp Plus in the 69 has the external shift rods you have to remove, and then readjust when you put it back together.
