I had the trans rebuilt with an overhaul kit from monster trans...http://racetransmissions.com/store/p...roducts_id/402 two of the shift springs were broke,replaced with a little heavier springs and the clutch basket gear was cracked off so that was replaced ...not upgraded unfortunetly(already rebuilt before I knew about it needing to be replaced).Anyway heres the problem the trans shifts into second and then seems to shift again or bog down alittle but still in second. Any idea why it would do this? also the guy rebuilding it(friends uncle, mechanic) said there were a bunch of metal shims back to back in (I believe) the first gear clutch pack so he put clutches discs to take up the space instead of just shims. The converter was replaced with a 2400 stall I bought used from a member. any info greatly appreciated. thanks

 

I recorded a video of my tach but I cant upload it. Any way this is whats happening....going from a stop run to say 1800rpm, shifts to second drops @ 300rpm stays there a second then drops another 500rpm or so. Also when it initially shifts into second if I hit the gas it seems like the trans is slipping.

sounds like you have the detent cable misadjusted.. without being there or anything that's all the information i have to give.

 

What speed is the 2nd "shift" at? Not RPM, but speed...

Sounds like it could be the torque converter lockup kicking in. The rebuild made things more crisp and firm in the trans, so you feel the shifts, plus w/ the lock up kicking in, it SHOULD feel like an extra shift.

 

so the torque converter locks up in 2nd..I thought only in 4th...its shifting into second around 15mph.

 

In some 1987's (early) the valve body can lockup 2nd, 3rd, & 4th gear. It might not be slipping, just coming out of lockup. The TV cable should be adjusted correctly before chasing down a problem.

 

I pushed in the button..pushed back the adjuster slide...went into the car and pushed on the gas pedal to the floor....she clicked her self out and that was that.I was told to do it in the car do to floor mats and carpet instead of on the throttle linkage Also the trans is out of an 88 parts car I bought..I know there were 3 letters on the side of it.

 

does that sound about right for mph on shift to 2nd?
