700R4 Slips When Hot PLEASE HELP!!!!

i been around and around with this and different thoughts, i got a built (and i mean built strong) 700R4, the problem is it gets real "spongy" when the car gets over 200 deg, im guessing then it isnt cooling the trans enough with the cooler in the rad, anyway it almost seems like the converter is slipping of not locking up, or locking up late, its olny started this in the past 2 weeks, its got 8k (and a little over a year) on the rebuild..... here is a little of the symtoms, you can mash it off the line when its hot, is seems and im not sure it is to slip some but it may not be, its real soft going into 2nd (when its cold or when it was acting right it would lay out rubber going into 2nd) and run 2nd up to about 5k RPMs (higher than normal) then go into 3rd at aprox 65mph and at about 75 its acts like it completly slips for a second (or the converter disengages or it goes into 2nd) and this is for less than a second goes to normal and then back to that crap, all real fast like bam bam bam, let off and give it less than WOT and everything is ok, same goes for a WOT pass at 65-70 mph, now all of this is when its hot, when its cold when the engine is under aprox 180 deg, its kick a** and walks the dog runs perfect lays out rubber going into 2nd and none of that crazy back and forth crap at WOT at 65-70 mph

got home after this check the fluid, maybe slightly high, nice clean and red, no burnt smell and not super hot, seems like as hot as it should be, im guessing it should be from 170-220, and i dont think the fluid was any hotter than that

could my TV cable got screwed up??
trash in the valve body??
clogged filter??
messed up servo??
governer issue??
should i use and external cooler??

please help im getting really at this, i spent to much $$$$ on this trans and had the best rebuilder within 200 or more miles build this, a guy who specializes in 700R4's for performance use, i just dont want to take it back to him and pay him $$$$ for something i could fix with some help of figuring out where to go with this

Re: 700R4 Slips When Hot PLEASE HELP!!!!

you should figure out the line pressure in the trans..... there is a npt plug on the case 1/4 or 1/8'' i cant remember. and hook a pressure guage to it, i dont remember what exactly the correct pressures should be but somone on here must.

and second i say its running WAAAY to hot. i dont like it when trannys run any hotter than 160 EVER. if you dont have a trans temp guage GET ONE! i say add a external cooler run it inline with the stock one in the radiator and also upgrade to larger cooler lines i am a fan of the -6AN steel braded tranny cooler kits found on jegs. the one for the th350 has all the stuff needed for a 700r4. thats the kit i used. heres a link to the line kit, and a link to the line kit w/ cooler

Re: 700R4 Slips When Hot PLEASE HELP!!!!

oh the temps i posted are the temps of the coolent for the motor,im just figureing thats makeing the trans temp warmer than is should be, i dont know exact temp of the trans as i havent put a temp gauge in it yet.

what GVW size cooler should i get?? (you know how coolers are rated in how heavy of a GVW {gross vehicle weight} they can handle) the one on JEG's is more $$$$ than what i want to spend right now

But anyway are you are saying to hook up an aftermarket cooler, inline with the factory one that goes in the rad?? should i have it going through the aftermarket cooler first and then the factory one, or factory one first and then the aftermarket one

what about just running a after market cooler, like one for a big motorhome thats heavy duty

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ot-tranny.html

There are a few coolers listed in there that are just about the exact same as that, only they will run you about 1/3 to 1/2 the price.

I suggest just going into the local parts store and asking what coolers they have. The ones that look like a mini radiator are going to be the better ones, like the one posted from Jegs.

You run through the radiator cooler first, then the aftermarket cooler.

like he said, you run through the stock first than the aftermarket.
i also suggest you invewst in a temp guage for it still

Re: 700R4 Slips When Hot PLEASE HELP!!!!

I had a similar problem a LONG time ago. It turned out to be the Throttle Valve cable. It had stretched and broke the bottom of the end of the cable. It was not connected to the throttle body. It would shift at 5k and shift hard as hell. It ended up burning up the trans and I had to rebuild. There is a guy on here that is a trans expert but I forget his name. I know his real name and that he works at a performance shop but I'll see if I can figure out his name so you can PM him. I know he does great rebuilds on a budget.

Re: 700R4 Slips When Hot PLEASE HELP!!!!

JOY!!!!!!!!! its the band burned up again

for a transmission that was suspose to be built for the drag strip ( it seen it once) and hold up to a big motor (i got a 305 TBI Mildly Modded aprx 250HP, that not near 400)......and it lasted a little over a year and with 8k miles

i guess that was over $2k down the drain

boy im sure glad i havent got a chance to build the motor i wanted, it may have only lasted 3k
