Whoops....took the weights off the clutch...

Well when i installed the CF DF clutch I removed the weights that are there to slide up and down on the fingers on the pressure plate. Run runs and shift fines. Does vibrate a little more but does it even with the pedla disengaged. It really doesnt feel like anything is wrong with it.

anyone think I should be concerned, or is this now just a regular clutch now that I removed the weights?

Re: Whoops....took the weights off the clutch...

i also would recommend you stay away from centerforce.. i have a dual friction and i took the weights off of it.. yes, i basically have a stock clutch now.. i found that my clutch works 10X better without the weights.. my theory is that the weights would sort of make the fingers on the pressure plate somewhat of a springboard.. bending at the weights instead of moving on the pivot.. i had ALOT of problems trying to powershift this clutch until those weights came off.. now i can powershift easy.. i'll be going to a ram once i roast this clutch.. but dont get me wrong, the centerforce still bites hard.. i've done a 5500 dump on drag radials and slicks.. NO problem.. i just spun the radials hard.. and the slicks..
found that while searching a little deeper through the site. kinda confirms what i was thinking, maybe ill just roll with this for now.

Any one got any other advice or ideas on this?

You mentioned a vibration due to removing the weights. I have been trying to find a vibration in my 88 IROC with a 5 speed. I only have it when the engine hits 3500 to 4000 rpm..........My car is suppose to have a centerforce clutch in it............could this be where its coming from?

Well I dont know since I have done a complete resto of the entire front end and converted it to 5 speed. Just seems to have some vibrations going through the car. Dont remember that doing it 2 years ago when it was running. But when i push in the pedal it disappears so Im assuming it the egine, maybe the exhaust harmonizing with the body at some point.

i removed my weights because it would not let me shift above 6k.. still holds everything i throw at it.. also shifts like butter instead of a rock

Really? You guys are taking the weights off on purpose? I suppose if it helps with power shifting...you all have your reasons, just seems odd to me I guess....

Maybe I just got lucky with mine, shifts smoothly and I still have the weights on.

Why not just get a Spec stage 3 clutch or something?

I've always said Centerforce's weights were a gimmick.

I've always recommended McLeod clutches.

There's really no "gimmick" or black magic about them. When things spin, such as a disc, anything mounted on the outside is subject to centrifugal force. The weights help apply more pressure on the pressure plate to the friction disc......There's no getting around it. "Gimmick" or not.

A bud of mine had a centrifugal weight assisted pressure plate on his '69 Roadrunner installed by Stu's transmissions out in Calif. back in the eighties - their shop is close to where you are - a VERY reputable drag racing oriented shop in it's day - they sold them way before centerforce thought about coming out with theirs. He ran a 4 speed 440 magnum with nitrous and stock clutches just wouldn't hold. Never slipped once with the weight assisted clutch.

I've heard some say the centerforce clutches also make their trannys shift "clunky" - and maybe they do, but I just can't see the relationship to the weights and hard shifting I guess. I know my tranny shifts smooth with the weights and the clutch hasn't slipped once - even with 450 plus ft/lbs of torque. That being said though, if the weights are not balanced as an assembly, they could no doubt cause serious vibration issues.

But as you said, A heavier duty pressure plate and disc such as a Mcleod brand is a tried and true option and was done way before anyone thought up any weight assisted pressure plates. Only downfall to them is the increased spring rates on those pressure plates can make your clutch pedal mighty stiff to push in. Maybe not a big deal if you have a hydraulic assist clutch, I don't know since I don't have one.

But it's a free country, so you can call it a "gimmick" and not recommend it to everyone. I'll still buy another one once I wear out this one!

Re: Whoops....took the weights off the clutch...

speedjunkie, just realized the quote you posted was mine from a while ago.. the weights didnt affect much, performance wise, since i have tried a few 6000 dumps and it still grabs very hard.. i've pulled the wheels on a few 2nd gear shifts too.. but my clutch only has about 5000 miles on it, over half the miles are hard abuse..
