axles???

ok i have a 1986 camaro and i want to use bigger axles im 80% sure the axles i have now are 26 spline.. i was wondering if the newer 28 spline axles would be a direct replacement???? im upgrading to 3.73 gears and im buying a eaton lsd so... i want better axles. they have to hold a turbo'd 5.3.

Re: axles???

You can't change the number of splines without changing the carrier.

Re: axles???

The LSD, gears and axles are pretty much all there is inside.

Re: axles???

Maybe an installation kit if the gears or LSD don't come with it, new axle bearings...

Re: axles???

The Eaton is by far the better one. I don't like the Auburn at all and I almost refuse to install one for any of my customers. You will be much happier with the Eaton. It's well worth the extra money. Be sure that you get 28 spline axles for the 3rd gen because the 4th gen axles are longer.

Re: axles???

You couldn't pay me to put another Auburn in mine. While my original Auburn unit is still working at the moment, there's no way I'd pay good money for another one when you can't rebuild it. The Eaton's cost is comparable to the Auburn, and it's fully rebuildable. Also, I used to think there wasn't that much difference in size between the 28 and 26 spline axles. That was before I compared a set of each side by side! The 28's are considerably thicker than the 26's. All 90-92 f-body 10 bolts got the 28's, so if you order a set of axles for that application, they should be 28 spline and the correct length. There's no difference between the 7.5" and the 7.625" ring and pinions either. They all fit any 82-02 f-body 10 bolt rears. I'm already prepared for the day my Auburn unit finally dies. I picked up a 28 spline, Zexel-Torsen posi carrier from a 98-up 10 bolt on ebay for cheap a while back. When the Auburn bites the dust, in goes the Torsen! You may want to consider getting a Torsen if you're on a budget. The nice thing about them is they use gears instead of clutches for the posi action, so there's no clutches to worry about wearing out someday.
