26 vs 28 spline axles

I had my friend at a local GM dealer look up the part numbers for thirdgen axles. Yes he knows what he's doing. According to the computer, all 9-bolts have 26 spline axles, as the axle part number is the same from 85 to 89. The 10-bolt axle part number changes from 89 to 90, so I am assuming that 10-bolts didnt get 28 spline axles until 1990.

9 bolts use totally different axles than the 10 bolts. Not only are the lengths different, but the 9bolts don't have provisions for the c-clips.

The left and right 9-bolt axles are also different lengths. When I first started looking, I phoned the dealer. He must have thought I was looking for 9-bolt axles because I said posi and disk brakes and he said it showed left and right. The price was also outrageous.

Every rear I've seen has had different length left & right axles.

But, perhaps I haven't seen them all...

Some GM rears have equal lenghts. Actually I think the 7.5" 10 bolt does (or pretty close)

the 7.5 has = lengths, I had to order a pair of 28s for mine from dutchmann for $240 and they were equal length.

Are you correcting me, or adding more info? I knew that. I was just providing the info on the change from 26 to 28 spline axles.

Vortecfcar, check your sig. I didnt know there was an "E" in Camaro.

Learn something every day. I've not had the axles out of a 7.5.

Actually the info helped me since I was considering the SLP takeoffs in my 88 and alot of people seem to be asking about this swap.

I got my 28 spline axles from Camaro Heaven (1-800-CAMARO1) for $75 each. He only had 1 disk brake axle at the time, so I had to turn the flange down on the other one to fit inside the rotor.
