recomendations on 700R4 rebuild book

What books do everybody recommend to get to rebuild an '85 700R4.

Edit: I just read another post and in it somebody said that Transtar makes good transmission parts. I found this kit on http://www.northernautoparts.com part number K6100A-R.

This book part no. 61Y01 pops up with that. Has anybody used this book?

I know there is a Hayes manual out there too. All opinions welcome.

Is this the Haynes manual that everybody uses?

Haynes is decent and has a good step by step process, but they assume you have all the special tools...

I'm about halfway done writing a manual on doing this rebuild w/o any special tools and still working at it. The problem is the massive amount of pictures (Over 210) and writing text to compliment.

My buildup also explains where your at the right point to do a mod, explains the benifit of it, and also some of the cons against it so you make a decision based on what you want. Haynes is just a 'stock' rebuild. But the fixes for common probs that could detroy the transmission are left out of the text.

I'm working as hard as possible to get it done, and will offer my own "shift kit" and small parts to really make a novice understand what they are doing in each 'mod' so they could LEARN a great deal about trans in the process.

A 1st timer should never attempt a rebuild in the driveway with the wind blowing dust around...

And never to 'hurry up' and get that tranny done so I could get back on the road type deal.

Hurry is a bad word because the 700r4 is prolly the second (next to the 2004r) trans to rip into. Many parts and way to many seals and o-rings to confuse the hell of out einstein if you get a little rip the part out and slap it back in fever. One little alost worthless rubber piece missing in there and it will either cause you the grief of taking it back out and ripping into it to fix the prob, or usually the latter, a whole new rebuild because of low pressure in a area because your rebuild didn't work quite right, so you figured it needed a 'break in'

I'm writing this as not a stand alone, but as a higher foundation to build on a basic rebuild manual (Haynes) to make a trans that will hold power and last... and tips to save money doing it.

Coming soon to a theater near you....

Get the ATSG book. It is awesome! I'm going to get one for every type of transmission that I do from now on!

www.transonline.com is their web site. I get the manuals from the trans parts supplier that I get kits from. I have been using Dacco kits.

I don't even have it close to done. Probably sometime in late summer since I have a job and another major car project in the works.

I called Northern, she said she needed a part number. I've found manuals on their site for 700R4's, but it doesnt' say it's the "Auto Trans Service Group" book. It's

$12.99
Transmission Repair Manuals - Tech Service Manual
THM 700R4, 82-86

Is this is the book?

I'm not sure. I haven't gotten one for the 700 yet. I've only been doing 4L60-E rebuilds since I knew the shop I buy parts from carries the ATSG manuals. That does sound right though, I remember they had one for 82-86 and one for 87-up. They have a list of the manuals available in the books, so I'll look tomorrow when I'm working.

Keith, that 61Y01 number is for the 82-86 ATSG book... give the Northern chick that number.

I have that one (61Y01), the Haynes book, and the GM service manual. The ATSG book mirrors the GM service manual almost exactly- so now you don't need the GM book! I like the Haynes a lot; they show you what tools you don't need, and what tools you can make, and which ones you have to buy. Plus, the Haynes gives a photo-by-photo demonstration of a trans rebuild; the ATSG is very technical. Both have their place...

There's also the Transmission Rebuilder Network, at http://www.transbuilder.com ...

I second the ATSG book. There are a couple little tricks that can drive you nuts like JoelOl75 said. Most of it can only come together one way, but there are a certain few parts of the tranny that can be put together wrong and still fit (like the overrun sprag, it CAN be assembled backwards) There's also a rubber and teflon seal the size of a toenail clipping for the pump that's real easy to misplace (I lost it stuck in the side of the corrugated box of all the GD places).

Sorry, just wanted to bicht

I'll probably get the Haynes book and ATSG book. It would be good to have both. Thanks all.

I might end up getting a later model tranny before I overhaul the tranny though I will have to decide when it gets closer to time. I think I'll do the engine before I do the tranny.

Who knows I might get the engine apart and find it's ruined internally or something, go with a 350 and I would might want something different from the tranny then.
