'91 Camaro RS - 700r4 Will Not Shift

The car will drive fine through first and second gear, but around 30-35 the car will get around 3000 rpm and just rise to the redline without any change in speed or shifting into third. The car started doing this randomly a few months ago and I cannot figure out what is wrong. I have already changed the transmission filter and cleaned the everything I could get to while the pan was off and scraped all the crud off the pan so all of that should be in working order.

I think I'm willing to dump about $200+ into getting this damn thing fixed, but if I need tp pay out a large sum, it better be fixing the problem completely... such as replacing the transmission. Would prefer not to toss money at it and hope it gets fixed if you know what I mean.

My question is, what could be causing this problem? Will simply replacing the 700r4 with another solve the problem entirely or is there a simpler method to solving this problem?

Re: '91 Camaro RS - 700r4 Will Not Shift

If you mean shifting from 1st, 2nd and then putting it into drive... no difference. Shifts through first and second no problem, but as soon as it needs to go to third... it just revs up.

We've messed with the TV Cable... didn't do anything at all.

May have burnt out some clutches? How did/does the fluid look? How/when did this start?

Re: '91 Camaro RS - 700r4 Will Not Shift

The fluid, before I changed the filter, would go in red and be solid black as soon as I checked it a few seconds later... but now it's just the same as it is going in.

I never noticed any change in performance on the car. I just went out one night to go to the store and it started doing this. I had driven the car without giving it any kind of abuse. Just driving casually from point a to point b and after a few months of that it just randomly started to do this. I even drove it a few hours before I went out that night. I just can't stress how random it was for it to act up... and it's been doing it ever since.

Sounds like you burnt up some clutches! Everything has a time to go.

A weak transmission will usually die after a fluid change. The new fluid cleans everything that was holding it together.

A trans shop should be able to drive it and tell you for sure. Good Luck!

Would a Trans Shop charge anything to give a diagnosis? Never went to a mechanic or any kind of shop before to prevent having to pay extra cash. Major pain in the *** to take the car anywhere considering I can't get it over 30mph. lol.

Most "major" transmission shops will check at no charge, unless they have to remove the pan. I would call first!

Re: '91 Camaro RS - 700r4 Will Not Shift

I actually just bought 88blkiroc's 91 Formula and it shifted fine during my test drive and for my 30 mins on the highway it was perfect. Then I went to pass a semi and gave it gas and it got up to 45ish and just redlined when it tried to go to third.

Was a bad stroke of luck - but I have no regrets, he's fixing it for me. I don't have any blame at all it was simply a bad stroke of luck. Especially since he was with me on the test drive even and we tore it up and it was shifting hard and aggressively - never would have known that the 3/4 clutch was about to go.

Re: '91 Camaro RS - 700r4 Will Not Shift

Can the clutches be replaced easily at all? Could a couple of mechanically inclined guys get the job done or is it a specialty that we would need a shop for?

Re: '91 Camaro RS - 700r4 Will Not Shift

I think it'd call for a rebuild.
88blkiroc is completely replacing the tranny for me - so I'm assuming it isnt an easy fix.
