Probably cause your fluid is burnt and your tv cable is out off wack.

Either way you probably need a new tranny down the road. Either rebuild the one you have or buy one already rebuilt.

Agreed, it already has problems, flushing fluid/installing shift kits are not going to fix it.

I believe they usually have a core charge on them. I honestly couldn't tell you for sure because I've never had one replaced before. But, what are you going to do with a transmission that doesn't work?

Re: y does my tranny smell like an ashtray?

If you cant pull the tranny take it to a place and have it fixed and put it back in by yourself then a transmission shop will charge you any were from $1200 to $2000. If you can pull the tranny and bring it some where you would probably spend $700 - $1000 depending on what you put back in the transmission.

Re: y does my tranny smell like an ashtray?

i`d probably jus pull th tranny myself...i dnt c th point in payin extra $ 4 sumthin i can do...
the only q i have is: to take the yoke out of th trans do i unstrap th u-bolts from th rear end to th drive shaft first or jus unbolt th tranny and jus pull th yoke out, leavin th drive shaft still connected to th rear?

Re: y does my tranny smell like an ashtray?

Just because the fluid is burnt does not mean a transmission is shot, change the fluid and filter, replace the tv cable and governor. It very well could be ok. I do this to alot of high mile 700r4's and bring them back to life. If the fix works I would recomend changing the fluid one more time within a month, to help flush out more of the old fluid. If the fix does not work you'll have a new governor and tv cable for the new trans. It is amazing how quickly people condemn things around here w/o giving any other options a chance.....

There's no way to tell, people always flush them hpoing for the best, after there's a problem, sometimes it works, sometimes you waste 40 bucks...

Sometimes they last another 50 k, slipping and everything, sometimes 50 miles.

I would personally just prepare for the worst, if you just love the car and want to keep it for awhile. Of course if times are tight and it's the only thing you have to drive, try flushing, just don't expect alot.

As far as price, expect to pay 200-500 for an already pulled used unit, 400 to 700 for local shop with you doing the labor, 600-1100 for them doing the labor, or there's a host of online companies offering rebuilds from 800, to over 2k depending on what you need/want from it.

If I ever hear back from the admin, I'll become a vendor myself
