what limited slip works best???

86 camaro gu2 axle code 10 bolt

was wanting to get a limited slip rear end with 3.73 or 3.23

i was reading on some forms and i think the higher gears from my factory axle puts it into the series 2 catagory yet i dont know what spline i have, do you have to take your axle shaft out to find that out out or can you tell that another way???

also whats the better limited slip for a 3rd gen
friction discs style thats strong but dosent last or a gov loc thats not strong buts lasts a good while as long as it dous'nt go out???
also can you replace the discs in a limited slip to but it back in service??

just wondering what to get and what works better??? any help thanked.

Re: what limited slip works best???

Well I'd buy an Eaton Posi or truetrac differential. I think 86 should be 26 spline but w/o taking axles out and counting you cannot know for sure. If you buy a new posi. You really wont have to worry about it going out for a very long time. The truetrac claims thier is nothing to wear out. eaton has friction discs that I guess overtime could wear. You just dont want a cone style.

Re: what limited slip works best???

If you can find a decent 9 bolt out of a iroc or gta probably be the strongest for the money, just make sure its a lower mileage unit due to parts kinda hard to find for these and if you do there kinda expensive to repair.

I thin the Eaton Posi is the best all around limited slip differential you can get for a GM car. They last longer than the car and they are strong. Yukon makes a Duragrip that is a copy of the Eaton with different clutch material. They are also good and about $60 cheaper. You will have 26 spline axles in your car.

Re: what limited slip works best???

Right, if it's original it will be 26 spline. If someone put in a '90 to '92 rear end then it will be 28.

Re: what limited slip works best???

Well, you could just get a Posi out of a 4th gen and transplant it into your Housing. You would need Axles from a 90-92 with the 28 Splines though.

Re: what limited slip works best???

its limited to your carrier. if your stock carrier is 3.08 and lower or 3.23 and higher uses different gears. One is a series 2 and one is a series 3. I cant remember which is which. A search on here will find out. If you do a lot of highway driving, I wouldnt go over 3.42's

I'd try this...with a late model 99+ fbody diff. Zexel Torsen diff...uses worm gears and not clutches. Last a long time, great for street applications and locks up well for drag. No clutches or disks to wear out like an auburn or 9bolt cone. I've had good success with both 3series and 2 series on my cars. COuldnt break them with my nitrous 383 and my twin turbo 401. They seem to be working well for me and a few others i've seen had good luck with them behind automatic trannies.

Re: what limited slip works best???

I went the expensive way and replaced everything, including putting on a LPW support cover. Changing into 3.42 from a 2.73 and adding the Eaton Posi. for me was the best mod. ever. Your going to love it when your done. Buy the way its "Eaton" FTW.
Here's a link to Eaton = http://www.eaton.com/EatonCom/Produc...iLSD/index.htm
And here one to the LPW Suport Covers = http://www.lpwracing.com/index.asp

Re: what limited slip works best???

I have a 1984 camaro originally a v6. I swapped motor and trans. Now it's time for the differential. I am not sure how many teeth I have or what I need to swap it out. Can someone give me some answers on this one?!?!

Re: what limited slip works best???

84 would have come with 26 spline axles.

DON'T buy anything 26-spline. Your axles are probably not any good anymore anyway, as they ARE the inner bearing race for the axle bearings. IOW as the bearings wear, the axles also wear; and replacing the bearings doesn't fix it.

Get a 28-spline carrier and NEW 28-spline axles. The vast majority of carriers you can actually buy are 3 series (for gear ratios 3.23 and higher) which is what you'll be wanting. The carrier out of a 98-02 V8 Camaro or Firebird would be a good one; alternatively, a True-Trac or a regular Eaton posi. NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES a Gov-Bomb.

Here's a photo showing the difference between 2 and 3 series. 2 on the left, 3 on the right.

And here's acoupla "before & after" ones showing why you DO NOT want a Grenade-Lock.

Before (what you'll see in the ad or as-installed):

Which turns itself into...

This carrier was originally designed for OFF-ROAD (low traction, on mud and sand and such) military vehicles. Note the 2 little weights on the little bitty axle pins in the "window" of the carrier. That makes up a "governor", an RPM-based moving part. The way it works is, there is NO POSI ACTION WHATSOEVER normally; that is, it behaves like a normal "open" (UNlimited slip) diff. But when the RPM difference between the 2 axles reaches some value exceeding what is normally expected going around a corner, indicating that one tire is slipping, it locks up with a bang (literally). If the vehicle has traction at that time, i.e. if this happens on pavement, the photo is the likely result. These were used in S trucks which have the same kind of rear as our cars, therefore they bolt right in. They are CHEEEEEEEEP because no one in his right mond wants one. DO NOT put one of these in your car! In the trucks they're referred to as the "G80" (GM's universal RPO code for limited slip), so if you see one for sale that's called by that name, RUN AWAY, no matter how cheeeeeeeeeeeep and attractive it seems.
