CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

Gidday,
I was wondering who you would recommend for Carbon Fibre or Aluminum Drive Shafts to suit '89' 350 Iroc?
I have been searching for hours and have only found an Aluminum shaft from 'The DriveShaft Shop' for $400......

Any others out there??

Re: CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

All third + fourth gen cars share the same tail shaft size.

An aluminium tail shaft was an option on third gens (RPO code JG1).

Second hand ones cost about $100 and do the job and there are plenty around.

Cheers! That sounds like the way to go. I did read up on the rare 1LE's having had them which got me thinking about getting something the same.

The JG1 alum shaft is often called the 1LE shaft, but in fact, many non-1LE thirdgen cars were equipped with it.

Apparently a of the V6cars had aluminium drive shafts, but few V6s made their way to Australia.

If the '98 - '02 4th gen cars made it to Australia the V8 cars have an aluminum shaft. It bolts right in and may be able to purchase one new from GM/Holden.

Re: CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

All Camaros wre imported privately into Australia, none by GM as far as I know.

Probably a zero chance of getting that type of part locally from GM.

Just buy one from the USA off of eBay for $120 bucks. Get it sent to a shipping agent who will add it to a container. You'd get it a few weeks later and the shipping agent will probably charge $50 for freight and handling.

I use East Coast Mustang as my shipping agent, who are in Melbourne. Peter Smith at East Coast Mustang is a great guy. There should be others in Brisbane.

Re: CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

I know someone in AU who exports and probably imports as well if you need a reference.

There are a few ways of going about this and not spending the $400. I bought a used aftermarket alum. shaft for very reasonable on eBay. If you wait long enough and find auctions ending at odd times, you can do okay.

While lengths aren't a universal factor, u-joints tend to be. So you may find one in your country that could be used with an adapter u-joint. For example, the Ford full size saloons here used as squad and taxi are donating their alum. drivelines to GM car enthusiasts.

Also, maybe you can find a used Holden unit that's perfect but for length. Driveline shoppes have a minimum shortening amount they're able to shorten; some will avoid it heavily so they can sell you a whole new unit. I'd at least find out criteria for shortening (such as consistend o.d. rather than varied) and range of costs to shorten a good used unit.

Because $400 is the going rate on alum. new ones, Start figuring out the hours you could spend self-educating on u-joints, surfing the internet and how easy it is for that $400 to make a lot of sense if you can just work some overtime.

G'luck.

Re: CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

Thank you all for the info,....

I think I will try & find a second hand unit that will fit.

I have also been searching for Carbon Fiber accessories and Titanium exhausts but have come up short for the F-Body's. (only 2 days of searching)

Any ideas there?

Re: CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

Paying $200 for an aluminium drive shaft is a reasonable upgrade, but going overboard on carbon fibre or titanium is a waste.

It's hard to get F-Body parts and bits in Australia. Much cheaper and better options if you import them.

Maybe start by putting on some headers and sub-frame connectors.

Re: CF or Aluminum drive shaft suppliers?

All depends how deep your pockets are I guess and the look or sound your after.

I'm aware of header, runners, rockers etc etc............ it's the parts I can't seem to find I'm interested in.
