1991 camaro carbed 350 with hei distributor 700r4 transmission

A little new to this site. Second time on here so sorry if the question is a little out of wack..but i recently swapped out my transmission to a 700r4. I need to know how to get my speedometer working. Im not sure if 91s were electric or not but this 700r4 is cable. How do I convert this. This is my project car and the speedometer wasnt working when i bought it. The previous owner swapped 350 carb into it from the fuel injection. Also if anyone knows my tachometer doesnt work as well. I have the HEI distributor and just wondering while asking about speedometer if anyone knows how to fix or replace tach as well. The tach jumps back and forth when starting but when i sit with key turned over not started it climbs up and i have no idea why. Any help with both mainly speedometer right now will be much appreciated. I have asked many people and I have got nothing so thanks for all the help.

Ps all other guages work fuel guage, temp guage, oil guage

Re: 700r4 question
700r4's had both mechanical and electrical speedo hook ups. They sell adapters to convert from one to the other on summitracing or some place like that. The tach on the other had may have an electrical problem with the resistors and such. There are threads on how to calibrate and determine which one you need as well. All else fails buy a new one

You could get the elec speedo drive (VSS) and gears for a T700 from a junkyard or use one of these on your current cable drive to give speedo signal

Hopefully the PO left the VSS wiring in place by the trans

What engine did your car have before the carb swap?
If it was TPI then you have more problems because the speedo signal first went to the computer ( gone with the carb swap) then to the speedo itself
Also , now you have a carb you need some means of operating the lockup convertor in the T700 that the computer used to do

Re: 700r4 question
I also have a question about the 700r4. Figured this was a suitable post to ask it on since I can't figure out how to make my own thread on here (newish member).

The other day while cruising down the highway at about 70mph my transmission acted like it just went into neutral. 4th gear in OD just disappeared, as well as 3rd. First thing that came to mind was my 3-4 clutch pack burnt out for who knows what reason. Dropped the pan to see if there were any chunks of anything in the bottom of the pan or any metal shavings, you know, tell tale signs of catastrophic transmission failure. Trans fluid was almost perfect. Not burnt, no metal shavings, no chunks of friction plates etc. My next guess was the transmission control solenoid. Replaced it, still nothing. Btw, 1st, 2nd, reverse, neutral and park all function correctly, no slipping, grinding, clunking, clicking, slapping, etc. I readjusted my tv cable, still nothing. Is it possible that the governor randomly went bad or one of the valves is stuck? Is there anything else that I may be missing that I should check before I drop the transmission and tear it apart? The strangest thing is, there were no symptoms prior to this happening the other day. My transmission wasn't slipping, and shifted as usual smoothly between all gears. I'm at a loss right now. Any suggestions or ideas would definitely be welcome. Thanks in advance for a reply

Re: 700r4 question
I know its been about two months now, but the same thing happened to mine, clean fluid, dropped 3rd and 4th. What actually happened was 3rd and fourth had stripped completely out.

Link for pics.

Re: 700r4 question
I don't know if it is to tell the truth. I'm fairly certain mine was abused a little before I got it, and I'm also fairly certain its the original tranny, so 188k miles IMO, not too bad lol

Re: 700r4 question
From what I've been reading online and from a couple people that I know that have worked in trans shops, the 3-4 clutch pack failure in the 700r4 is one of the most common failures in these transmissions, requiring a rebuild of at least that clutch pack if you're lucky. It's the weakest point in these transmissions. I'm just trying to check everything else that I can before rebuilding it or getting it rebuilt since I'm pretty tight on cash right now. I'm starting to think that it's that clutch pack though. But you're right, it also may be stripped. Either requires at least a partial rebuild. Checking the valves and governor later today. I'll update this post this evening when I have more info for the sake of anyone else having the same problems as me.

Re: 700r4 question

I'm looking into the monster rebuild kit on monster transmissions .com and the tci auto part#379005. the monster one is more but comes w more. I'm putting the B&M shift kit in my 700r4. it a 1985 Z-28 w original trans. any thoughts ideas or ways any other products any one has used would be very appreciated
