on my 86 iroc, with a 305tpi. the transmission will only shift around6-7k rpm only if u let off the throttle then get on it again, its like that in almost all gears.any ideas? tv/kickdown cable or anything? wasnt doing this befor it sat for awhile

 

Definitely start by checking the tv cable, and make sure the fluid level is correct. "Sitting for a while" and shifting at 7K doesn't sound like a great recipe.

 

Sounds like the tach is WAY off, as usual...

And of course, it has the trans problem as well.

 

fluid levels are great, tach matches the same rpms as on my scanner.and the thing screams, then shifts. adjusting tv cable later on, hopefully fixes it.

 

Setting is hard on em & things stick Change the trans fluid & filter Then put a bottle of Lucas trans fix in it Top off with good trans fluid & go drive it Preferably where you can start & stop romp on it 4L60E trans will do that too when setting Rompin on it will unstick stuff

 

i did put a new trans filter and gasket, with some valvonline dex 3 in there, fluid is still full. might try some trans fix though. curious.. the 700r4's if im not mistaken dont have the vaccum modulator? or what did they use in place of that if anything.

 

No vac modulator, tv cable instead.

 

400 turbos had the vac modulator & some website sells a kit for the 700R4/4L60E if I remember right Been awhile since I built a 700R4 lol Try the Lucas trans fix If that doesnt work I will ask my buddy that does transmissions every day

 

700R4 has a centrifugal governor to control shift rpm. If the engine is down on power the transmission will not shift properly. I had a fuel pump that lost pressure around 4800 rpm and that is where the vehicle would stay when at full throttle in first gear, until i lifted just slightly, then it would bang into 2nd. A few fuel pump that provided proper pressure consistantly fixed the issue. I would stay away from the lucas stuff, it doesn't do nice things to the inside of a transmission, its more of a used car dealer quick fix item.

 

now the tv cable wont click when i tried adjusting it, and the lack of power occured the day the tranny wouldnt shift, wouldnt even chirp the tires, even if you tried.

 

My irocz does it too. I have an 86 and no matter what gear it shifts in to it shifts at 6500 rpm every time. Sounds like I may need a tv cable adjustment too. I did find an article for it here too if interested.

i solved mine i think, it was a combo of things, its only for stop and go city driving, but 1st - 3rd is ok
