Re: where to get vss

You would need 2k ppm to your vss buffer.

That VSS won't work with the buffer box, states it right in the ad.

Need a 4K PPM magnetic VSS.

Re: where to get vss

that's what I thought but since my engine is TBI is should be fine... unless the fbody tbis use a buffer box with the tbi and tpi, in which case im screwed

The VSS listed way above is OK if wired directly to the ECM. It works for vehicles where TBI is swapped into them while retaining the cable driven speedometer.

For your car with the electronic speedometer, it won't work. The '90 - '92 TBI 3rd gens use a 4K PPM magnetic (sine wave) VSS that feeds a 4-OUT BUFFER box. The buffer then feeds digital streams to the speedometer (4K), cruise control (2K), and ECM (2K).

The forth output (4K) is unused.

Note that Firebirds got the magnetic VSS in '89 (maybe '88?).

See jagsthatrun.com. They have the VSS you need. Be sure to download the pdf they have on their VSS page. You may need to order it with the extension cable to clear the tunnel.

You may be able to use the VSS listed way above along with an SGI-5 box. Have that box create a 4K sine/magnetic signal to feed the 4-OUT BUFFER. Be sure to read the documentation for the SGI-5 before ordering, just to be sure it can do this.

Re: where to get vss

insert bad words here followed by a bunch of !

sigh sometimes I hate our cars.

update: I may not have the wrong part after all. I quote from jagsthatrun.com,

There are 4 types of VSS signals required by the ECM:
1. The two-pulse (2000 pulses per mile) square wave (D.C current or direct current) used on all TBI engines thru 1992, all computer-controlled-carbureted engines, and on 1985-1989 TPI engines.

2. A four-pulse (4000 pulses per mile) sine-wave (A.C. current or alternating current) signal is required by the 1990-1993 TPI, 1992-1993 LT1 engines, and 1990-1993 Camaro 3.1/3.4 V6 engines.

seeing as how I have a stock 92 tbi and its a v8 not the v6 one would assume that's the right part...

Re: where to get vss

That is what is required by the ECM, not the buffer box or speedometer:

Re: where to get vss

I'm sorry man I told you to buy the wrong thing. Tpi parts 2k ppm must be a optical unit not a magnetic pulse like the 4k ppm retrofit witch the 4k unit would work and the buffer could be ditched but it would take the purchase of the Dakota digital sgi-5. If they end up shipping it ill pay for the return and any restocking fee for giving you bad information.

its ok we all make mistakes. I kinda would like to add this as a sticky (not this thread, maybe a cleaned up one) but still seems like it should be since t-5 swaps are common enough.

I just hope they work with me and not try to be dicks like some companys lol. wont now for a couple of days.
