T56 Gear mods??.

Looking to find if anyone offers a gear mod for what amounts to the super low 1st/2nd gears on a T56.Looking forward to the 6th gear ratio. That is what I want.Just seems especially 1st gear is almost like a creeper gear.

Any and all inputs invited.

Please and Thank You,

Gary

Re: T56 Gear mods??.

The 94 - 97 T-56 , as well as the LS1 version, has about the same 1st gear as a lot of old 4-speeds; 2.65 or thereabouts.

You must have a 93 one, which has a 1st about like a T-5 (right close to 3.0).

In which case, best mod for least $$$ would be to simply use the other kind instead.

Re: T56 Gear mods??.

If you have a 3.3x / .62 T56 and want a 2.66 / .50 model, selling yours and getting the other is what you should do. The countershaft and 1st / 2nd / 3rd are what needs changed to make it a 2.97 first / .62 sixth.

Drop me a line with the codes off the tag up top / the tailhousing bolt tag when you get time.

Because nobody wants em, because the gears SUCK.

I never knew there were any with any gears worse than the 93s. 3.3x sounds like something Frod would do. That would be about like driving a 10-speed except with every other gear missing. Enough to make you feel like opening your veins.

94 - 97 is the one to get.

Re: T56 Gear mods??.

1993 had a wide ratio M28 RPO with 3.3x first. That's as wide as it gets. It came with 2.73 rear gears.

M29 was 2.97 first. Actually a good setup, ratio-wise. But, no better than V8 T5 ratios other than the added 5th gear. This one was in front of 3.23 gears.

The headset gears are narrower on both 1993 boxes.
Still a better trans. than any T5.

Check Tick's Performance, it may not be worth the cost over starting with a later t-56, but I think they could do it.

Re: T56 Gear mods??.

That is a matter of opinion, I have the Tremec aftermarket 2.97/.63 trans and for me it couldn't be better.
I use 3.73 rear gears and cruise at 2200 in 6th @70 MPH (20+MPG)
I launch @ 6000 + with no problems.
The best part is, I didn't have to cut a bigger hole in the floor because it uses the square shifter pattern like a T-5.

Re: T56 Gear mods??.

It's the torque rating that makes the 93 a cheaper tranny, 400 compared to 450 from the later ones.

Personally I like the 93 M29's gear ratios though the M28's 3.36 first gear would be a little much. I have the 94-97 tranny with the 2.66/.50 and 3.70, I find you have to ride the clutch little to much in first, 4.10's would be ideal for this tranny.

Exactly: much like old 4-speeds.

I just have the weenie stock highway gears in my car (3.73) with the 94-97 box, IMO they're not really enough. OK but just barely. With the .5 OD, it does about 1600 RPM @ 70 mph, so some more gear wouldn't hurt anything, for take-off.

I would SURE not want the wide-ratio ones. Problem with those is, there always seems to be TOO MUCH space between gears; like no matter what gear you're in, you never have the "right" one to shift into next.
