E-Trans and 1/4 mile racing

Guys that have gone to e-transmissions (4l, 6l, and so on) are you guys still manually shifting at the track, or are you programming WOT shift points to mimick what you would do with the stick anyway?

This probably leans more towards aftermarket controllers, although I honestly don't know what the stock PCM's do other than my LT1 car and it's stock so I have not played with the shift logic.

I've been considering going to a E-trans, losing the Megashifter and going with a factory shifter, and using a Microsquirt trans controller.

Re: E-Trans and 1/4 mile racing

If you have an "E" trans and can do your own programming, stock or aftermarket PCM's, I see no reason to ever shift it manually for 1/4 mile racing. On my 4L60E, shift quality and shift points are superior and consistent when I program it and let it shift itself. The only exception would be holding in 3rd manually to race the big end in bracket races.
With that said, I also would argue that if you already have a "non-E" trans, it makes little sense to add that cost and complexity to a vehicle, unless money and time are no objects in achieving that last hundredth in ET and consistency. With practice, you can get damn good using a shift light.

I have a TH350 right now. Have been thinking about an overdrive trans.

Motor is a 412" SBC, peak HP is around 5800. The supercharger is pulleyed to make around 800 flywheel hp, give or take. So it should be setup for around 130-131mph trap speed with 26" tires.

The problem is cruising on the highway. At 80mph it wants to be at 3500 RPM, which is obnoxious.

With a OD trans, I could run around 2400-2500 RPM which would be a lot better.

And I think the lower first and second gear would get it into boost quicker.

So, I could just program my shift points at like 5800 or so and just hold it to the floor at the track (in drive, not OD).

What do you guys use for shifters? Stock or ?

I agree. E trans no excuse NOT to let it shift automatically. All the ones i have used/tuned for, i love the ability to set it and forget it. Its more consistant. Not as fun as manual shift but definitely faster and consistent to leave it auto. Most of the oem stuff you have shift times and line pressure control and ability to control shifts via a mph. Back calc the rpm but once you got an idea for your powerband you can dial in perfect shift times.

Just hope the trans is built to handle it lol 60e's typically dont fair well in performance applications so the 80e is commonly used. Its a th400 basically with overdrive

OK, I understand more now the situation you're in. Sorry I didn't even look at your sig.
Your combo has 4L80E written all over it

I'm old. I wanna step on the pedal and get a time slip lol

I was looking at the software settings in MS, seems to offer both RPM or MPH shift, shift delays and times, line pressure stuff, and a bunch of other things based off TPS, CTS, etc. Was curious how the other aftermarket stuff handled it.

I'm running $EE in the Vette, and didn't really look at it. Although from merging on the highway, I can tell you my vette will shift around 6200. Not sure if that's normal. It does have a 'delay' between shifts, it's not as firm as i'd like.

Does a 80e fit ok? I'm using a SBC so I want a TBI/L31 trans, not the LS version with modular bell.

I built a 700R4 about 15 years ago. It sucked, but I got it done. Th350 is much easier. There is a few threads on 1,000hp 4l60e's but there is also a ton on 4l80e. I have not bought anything yet, still in the decision making process.

Haha. No worries, and thanks. I'll do some more research on stuffing a 4l80e in the trans tunnel. I'll surely end up remaking my crossmember, but I'm also concerned about my long tube headers and dual exhaust.

Re: E-Trans and 1/4 mile racing

Early 4L80E's bolt up to Gen 1 type bellhousings.

Yeah, the 4L60E behind your LT1 will never have the perfect shift quality until you do some valve body mods to it, ie. Transgo or Sonnax kit. Programming pressure and delay parameters can only go so far. If you didn't already have the 093 1-2 servo which came standard in the Vettes, the shift quality would be even worse.

I tuned a few in $EE. Fbods. Their limiter is 5800 so they shifted earlier. I raised everything up. You can get them somewhat decent in shift time and such but i hate doing hard shifts on 60e's lol

Well, I know it's not a turbo that builds boost better with a taller first gear, but the 4L60 1st is still gonna have a blows the tires off the rims faster and is harder to launch factor.

80-E was always set up with SBC bell depth. If an LS Van or truck had a 4L80-E, it had either a longer crank, or a spacer to make the crank longer and equal to SBC crank effective length. Don't think they went mod. bell, but even if they did, there are a few reasons to go with a newer core anyway.
