Should I buy a 9 bolt rear end?

Hi All,
Hopefully you can help me out. I recently found and bought the 88 sport coupe that I owned from 89-04. It's in rough shape and I have it torn apart and will begin rebuilding it into what I always wanted it to be. It was a 305 TBI non posi car originally.
I have the chance to buy a 9 bolt posi disc 2.77 rear end for it but I'm not sure what it's worth. They are asking $750 which seems high to me. I can't find recent pricing on one anywhere online.
I'm going to do an LS in it and am concerned about the 2.77 gears also. I understand I need the disc Master cyl, prop valve, and handbrake lever and cable too.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer. This is the first time I've taken on a project this big, but I'm not afraid to learn. I'm sure this will be the first of many questions I will be asking!

There are some experts on here with a lot of knowledge, and I expect they will post and guide you on a few different options based on levels of $$ you are willing to spend. But to me, for a 9 bolt with 2.77 gears (or 3.27 even), thats way too much money. Do not pay that much $ for that. You aren't ready to fire the car up, so there is no need to jump on the first rear. I suspect months from now they will still have it. If you want a 9 bolt, for much less, just keep am eye on the classifieds here. One or more will pop up, be either straight rear or cars parting out.

You can get them in really nice shape for $300 or less. If the seller thinks that $750 is a good price, he is delusional

Thanks for the reply's guys. You confirmed what I suspected. I'm going to pass on it. From what I can tell I did not want the 2.77 anyway.

A 9 bolt with 2.77 and most likely worn out posi cones I would not pay more than $50. I would only buy it if I planned on rebuilding it with proper gears before ever running it

Re: Should I buy a 9 bolt rear end?

I have the 2.77 9-bolt in my car (worn out @ 160k), and converting it to a Torsen with 3.70 gears cost around $1000. So no it's not worth anywhere close to $750 used. The 2.77 ratio sucks, and the cone type LSD will be clapped and shouldn't be rebuilt. Some will say you can but the results aren't spectacular. Besides you need a 3 series carrier for gears over 3.08.

Re: Should I buy a 9 bolt rear end?

If you can find a 9 bolt, complete with the gear you want, ready to drop in and go for a few hundred bucks it can be a great solution. That being said, I don't know that it should be "the plan" so to speak. Many years ago I took out my 9 bolt 2.77 for a direct swap 3.27. It was out of a TA my buddy and I bought whole for $500 and parted out. GREAT deal! Cones are finally getting old, and I've heard mixed reviews on rebuilding. Even if I did, it's "still" only a 9 bolt. I picked up a torsen swapped 10 bolt and beefed it up as a hold over, but ultimately the plan is something like a 12 bolt, s60 or 8.8.

I did not buy it. I will do rust repair and then move on to the other things on the list. I guess I just got a little ahead of myself. Thanks for the info!
